I was just putting the pigs out in their runs to munch the grass and felt a lump on Ruby's tummy area which I believe is around the reproductive organs. I brought her indoors to observe her and the lump and she is clearly in some discomfort as she starts squealing and nips when you touch the lump and the area around it.

Although you can't see the lump as it is covered in fur , you can definitely feel it. I would say at the moment it is the size of a Malteser. I have not really noticed any other symptoms, maybe drinking a bit more and resting a little more than usual and being a little grumpier with her sister Daisy.

Ruby is just a year and half I just don't understand how/why she would have something like this so young, she is quite a chunky piggy being a red pig but I wouldn't say she is over weight, I can't believe this

We will try and get an appointment with John chitty ASAP, Hopefully tonight if it is possible. Vibes please for my little Ruby piggy

This is my little Ruby

Aww, beautiful Ruby :).

I hope you will be able to get some answers about what the lump is - they can get so many lumps & bumps these piggies! I find this helpful http://www.guinealynx.info/lumps.html

Best wishes to you & your piggies :)

She's so very beautiful, Fingers and paws crossed it's nothing too serious and healing vibes being sent to Ruby. x

I'm very sorry to hear this....hopefully the lovely Ruby will get the attention she needs to sort out this problem.

She may be young to us hoomans ....but in piggie years it's not that unusual for her to present with a problem such as this at her current age.

John Chitty is brill and best choice.......but if he isnt available, you can also try Great Western Vets in Swindon as they are also piggy savvy......and Jenny Towers at Tilehurst in Reading is good with female "issues"

Hope Ruby finds it's nothing sinister than a lipoma.....and we get more lovely piccies of her.....the one above is gorgeous!

Hugs to you both

x

Thank you , we have an appointment with JC tomorrow evening at 17:50, The pets are registered at Anton and we use John a lot for the bunnies as he is really rabbit savvy.
John is great, the only vet I trust with my pets. Thank you for the suggestions , will keep them in mind if John retires in the future; I am hoping it won't be any time soon!

Thanks again , will keep you all updated.

Just a quick update on Ruby - We went to see John Chitty this evening, thankfully the lump is not a cyst or a tumour. John says it is a Hernia!

JC says it is nothing to worry about for the time being; Just monitor her and check the lump every 4 days to see if it gets any bigger. If it does get too big it will have to be removed but hopefully it won't come to that yet.

Anyway I am just glad its nothing 'too serious' :)

Hernia? That's a surprise one then... Is it expected to sort itself out okay?

Never heard of a Hernia in a piggie before, you learn something new. Glad you got her sorted and seen by such a well respected vet. Love to Ruby, she is a real sweetie

What a lovely photo of Ruby! Glad to hear the lump is nothing dangerous. While this is the first piggie hernia I have heard of, my new dog has one as well and all you can do is keep an eye on it. Hernias do not go away but are not dangerous unless they get to the point where the abdominal wall is breached by them. My vet said that my new dog appears to have had her hernia for many years. She is 3 and I recently got her from the RSPCA.

i got deja vu then and realised i read this on the rabbit forum mallethead love that pic of her, she's stunning! x
