I'm going to have to take her the vets in the morning I think, noticed she smelt a bit whilst handling her earlier, had a look at her and her she had recently peed and it smelt really strong. She looked like she might have calcium? deposits round her bits.

I'm just going to have to go to the local vets, as I'm not going to be able to get to any piggy vets. In the past they have prescribed baytril and metacam for esme which seemed towhich seemed to do the trick. Do you think it is worth asking about septrin if a uti is suspected, is it more indicated for utis?

I would certainly ask for septrin, it's off license as are most meds for piggies... So just tell them you'll willingly sign the consent form. It is better on tummies and seems to work better for UTI's. Although we had success with baytril in the past.

You've had septrin before for one of your girls haven't you? Any crying when weeing or anything? Give her a big cuddle for us x

I'm not sure about crying, I'm sure she squealed before but she was hidden under the ramp. Yeah I think Ruby has had septrin before but never from this vets, i don't know how prepared they are to prescribe off license. She has been eating fine and is generally herself, but she was able to be picked up earlier and sat quietly on my knee having some cystease and a little avipro in water, licking my arms and hand. She is normally very skittish so it was a little unusual. Since last week she has dropped about 50g .

Worth asking, they can only say no. Mention you've had it before.. Dose range is around 0.3ml-0.5ml twice a day for pediatric strength septrin.
Awww you got some piggie kisses off her or she was licking up the avi pro :))
The weight loss could be a fluctuation or it could be the start of something, your always so on the ball with your girls. Lots of healing vibes to her. Let us know how Ruby gets on x

Sounds like Ruby is coming down with UTI - not the bloody screaming version, but what I call the smelly pees version. Excess discharge of calcium is typical for a cystitis or UTI, especially in the early stages.

What you can do additionally to the septrin (baytril is not very effective with UTI's, so please make a try for), is feeding Ruby fresh dandelions - they are mildly diuretic and help flushing the bacteria from her bladder. Make sure that she drinks plenty; if necessary give her about 10-15 ml of water over the course of half an hour in order to help flush her bladder.
I usually ask the vet for some metacam, too, for the first 2-3 days of a UTI or cystitis. It is a painkiller as well as an anti-inflammatory and will make your girl feel better in herself while the symptoms are still acute.

All the best and a quick recovery!

Sometimes I think I am a little too on the ball as I worry about every additional squeak or odd behaviour. Looking back, she had 0.6ml septrin daily last time, so that fits with your dose. I will just have to ask about it and see what they say. x

Yeah, Septrin can have a high dose range, depending on the serverity of infection. Always check if it is child or adult suspension though.

I'm the same as you, but you know them that well that you can pick up on these little things that some people may miss. They are lucky to have such an attentive slave. You have good piggy intuition...

Thanks. She had quite a bit of water with cystease before, and a dash of avipro for taste. She must have had about 15ml of the water whilst sitting on my knee(on a waterproof mat).
The vets I go to have prescribed Esme cat Metacam before, but prescribed it using the dose on the metacam syringe so it was really difficult to use. I ended up giving the dose previously prescribed by a piggy savvy vet.

The dosis depends on whether you are prescribed cat or dog metacam. Dog metacam is the usual choice. The dosis for that is about 0.1 - 0.15 ml depending on the size of the (adult) piggy. Best of luck!

I went and got septrin but forgot to ask for metacam. Not been a very sucessful trip as the vets don't have septrin in although was happy to prescribe. So I took the prescription and have been trying to source it so we have some earlier than monday. It's a nightmare x

Glad you at least have a prescription for the septrin. How is she this morning?

I have a prescription but am unlikely to be able to get any until Monday at least. I kind of wish I had just let the vet order it for monday, but had hoped i would find it on an off chance in a pharmacy and would have got it sooner.
She seems okay, still a little squeaky but she is eating okay and drinking ok. They have been out on the grass and have been quite happy.
Do you.know.if ypu can take.a vet prescription to.another vets for dispensing?

How is Ruby today? X

How is Ruby today? X

She seems a little happier today no squeaking , considering she hasn't had any antibiotics or pain relief.
She and Tia( as T seemed to be squeaking yesterday ) have both had some cystease and diluted cranberry juice.
Just wondering what i should do with a 100ml bottle of septrin when i get it.

Glad she is not squeaking, that is a lot of Septrin lol! Hope you can get some tomorrow for her

My other thing would be to see if another vets would dispense it, but i'm sure he has written the dose wrong on the prescription. He read from the formulary and told me.it was every 12 hours but has written by mistake 3 times a day so am unsure whether they would dispense. Either way, it should likely work out cheaper from a pharmacy.

Finally got the septrin today. Wahey!
As far as I'm aware Ruby is still doing good(back at uni), she loves her diluted cranberry juice and my Mum is.starting her antibiotics today.
Had such a hassle sorting it, firstly they didn't have it in on Saturday, then yesterday the pharmacy couldn't dispense as they hadn't been given a course length/quantity to supply. So got through to the vets today and they have confirmed that it should be a 7 day course and twice daily. So now we have a 100ml bottle of septrin which will last until December, if we ever are prescribed it again. :)

Good news you managed to get it. Hope it does the trick... 100ml of banana yum yums cookie would be jealous :))

Healing vibes to Ruby x

Ruby is still passing blood. Noticed some on one of the coseys and just checked her and she has blood in her fur again. They have been outside and she has been fine eating and happy in herself. Going to weigh her in a second.

She's down to about 2233g after being on the grass and is currently hiding in a malteasers easter egg box.
So dhe has dropped about 30g from last week :(

She is still a healthy weight though. I have never had a piggy weigh so much. I would not worry about her just yet. I do hope she picks up.

We once had a piggie on septrin for 14 days with a stubborn UTI, it may be worth just getting an X-ray to rule out stones though. What dose is she on?

The course finished Wednesday morning as the vet said to give 7 days. She was o 0.6ml twice daily. Has seemed fine for the past couple of days so I thought it had cleared.
I tried to check her urine on my waterproof lap mat but she prefered to hide in the cardboard box with esme. Now me being silly, thought i would see when she peed and get it before it soaked in. 15 mins later of watching her like a hawk and supposedly no wee later I pick them both up and both are soaked.
:/

It's always the way..,, I would suggest a scan, X-ray and ultrasound. X-ray will show any stones, ultrasound can show thickened bladder wall which may be a sign of cystitis. Is she on metacam? This would be beneficial if it is inflammation causing the blood. It would also be worth discussing with the vet a longer course of Septrin in case it is a stubborn infection. Love and healing vibes to beautiful Ruby x

She hasn't had any metacam, as we weren't given any initially. I don't have any in though.
The vet did say if she hasn't improved after the antibiotics then they will scan her. I do still have the bottle of septrin but don't really want to continue it without the vets say so.

Sport Billy is right, she also needs some Metacam. To give you an idea of what another piggy is on, here's my Petal's doseage : Septrin 0.85 ml twice a day, Marbocyl 0.35 once a day, plus Metacam (Dog one) 0.1 ml twice a day. Petal weighs around 1.36 kg :) If your piggy is passing blood I would be looking at 2 antibiotics really, Petal had both of those for 10 days minimum each episode of cystitis she gets. Petal has also had x-rays & ultrasound scan, probably she will need another scan soon. She does sometimes still do a wee with a teeny amount of blood, and I mean pinprick size. I weigh her daily at the same time. Today she was 1.4 kg :) Does your piggy go out on the grass a lot? I ask because I had one in the past that used to do pink wees every time after she went out on the grass, but it actually wasn't blood. If you haven't got any diagnostic urine sticks I would also suggest you get a pack as I find them very useful in monitoring mine. I really sympathise & hope she gets better very soon.

I will get her back into the vets on Tuesday. At the moment it is not every wee and she isn't squealing. Yesterday she had been on the grass, only a small amount and did have blood? in her fur around and above her bits and the cosey cushion. It was red spots as opposed to pink. She was quite tender and was pulling her tummy in if touched. The vets have said bring her back and they will scan her. x

I'm so confused with Ruby. She hasn't been squealing, or had pink wee today and has been a generally happy pig. It does make me wonder if it is a flare up of cystitis or that she had passed some small crystals ( hence blood and squealing)
Esme has been a bit gassy from the slight increase in grass today so have been massaging her tum, and she did about 25 poops in a couple of minutes- she was like a machinegun
Safe to say she felt a lot happier after and went back to eating hay and pellets .

Could be Cystitis, I would get a scan done to rule out anything else and to give you piece of mind - They should be able to perform a scan without GA easily.
Treacy had Cystitis flare ups which we used to treat with Metacam daily for a week after a blood episode, it used to settle it down by reducing the inflamation. She was scanned and was clear of stones and sludge.

Love to Ruby. Glad Esme is ok now too, love to her too x
