runner beans

My piggies adore runner beans, They're always the first thing gone if they've got them for breakfast. I only discovered that they liked runner beans purely by accident - when I had nothing else to give them cause I hadn't been shopping.

Sorry to be a party pooper here, but beans of any variety should not be given to piggies.,in fact raw beans should not be eaten by humans because they contain an acid which is neutralized by cooking. Mary

I had read this before but tell Pookie et al! I actually don't give them the BEAN just the green bit.

Yes,the actual beans themselves are more likely to cause problems, but I would not give any part of a bean to be on the safe side. Mary

Sorry but have to disagree with you here.

My piggies love green beans - although they don't have them everyday. I have had piggies for many years now and have never had a problem with them having beans.

I will continue to do so. :)

Mine love them too, the Asda trimmed fine beans, and I love to eat them raw, one for the pigs, one for me ;D ?

Yep! Beans are in then! Like Kelly I shall continue to feed them. Bev - I eat them raw too!

They're tasty! really sweet and crunchy :) well the trimmed fine beans are, I haven't tried any others. and I love raw cauliflower too :P

I asked her that a while ago and she's not its just her user name ^-^

To all who enquired about my nickname,no I do not wear a white coat and I do not have letters after my name, not vetinary ones anyway.!Maybe I picked a silly board name, but I feel I know as much as the majority of bog standard vets who are not interested in pigs, because they do not bring in enough money.A vet can charge big bucks for treating a pedigree cat or dog.I have a medical background and have adjusted this to piggy care,I taught myself because of the lack of vet care and info about pigs, then I met Peter Gurney and he taught me all he knew, which is quite a lot.Of recent years I have been blessed by the arrival in my area of a vet who admitted she knew little about pigs but was interested and willing to learn.Peter taught her as well and she passed the knowledge on to another vet in the practise and also the vet nurses.I have lived with piggies for just over 20 years and am still on a steep learning curve with them. They are so complex and fascinating I love them very much and the more knowledge we can glean and pass on to others the better the outlook for these little creatures who have been so ignored in the past by the vet.profession.Thanks to the efforts of Peter, and vets like Anne and Andy this situation is now changing. Mary

To be honest, I've seen packs of runner beans in the supermarkets recently and they have had Do Not Eat Raw in big letters on the front, so I wondered about giving them to my boys, luckily we tried them on it before and they completely ignored them, so I guess we will just stick to our usuals! ;)

Hmmm... I have to say I think providing they're not poisonous (which runner beans aren't cause my piggies are still alive and kicking) then providing the piggies have no adverse reactions - which my two don't - then if they enjoy eating them then why stop them?

for sure :) A few on here have tried them too with no problems

Mine eat runner beans (chopped into small pieces) I recently tried them with sugar snap peas - they don't like them.
Every cloud has a silver lining & i munch happily on them whilst chopping their veg ;D

Stringless beans 'buy one get one free' in Tesco's today! More beans piggies!

I've eated loads of green french beans raw, as well as broad beans (yum). Surely it is just the dried beans that are poisonous?
