i found out that my piggie has lice , i have been looking around this website and the only thing i can see is this lice&easy shampoo but i live in iceland so I'm not sure if i can get it here :( are ther any advices about how to get rid of theese creatures are VERY good

lol= lots of love :p

I think the best is you go to a vet. The different vermins needs differnt treatments or are you absoluty sure that these are lices? Vets often use frontline against lices. But it's a really aggressive product and not the best to use on piggies.

Have you tried e mailing Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas, she may be happy to post out some Lice and Easy for you. xx

Don't worry, lices aren't life-endangering just unpleasent for the pig.:) The vet will help you tomorrow. :-)

I used cat flea spray on the advice of a very knowledgable breeder, it has Pyrethrins in that kill's them. worked for me

The best way, I've recently found, of getting lice from pigs is using about a teaspoon of normal sunflower cooking oil, rub it into a damp coat, wash off the excess oil with warm water, comb the fur through with a human head-lice comb and then rinse the coat again with some normal guinea-pig shampoo or a pea-sized amount of Johnson's baby shampoo (if you can get that where you are, or just use water.) In a couple of days, comb through the fur again with the head-lice comb, and you should see some dead lice. To make sure they're thoroughly clean, bathe again if you want to. If they live outside, don't put them back out until they're fully dry, and using a hair dryer may be useful providing you keep your hand over the body of your pig to stop it getting too hot, otherwise just towel dry.

The oil basically works the same way a shampoo would, it suffocates the lice and so they ultimately die pretty quick. Use only a teaspoon-full as it can be a nightmare to rinse out fully and can clog up their pours so their natural oils can't escape.

I am sure that you could order some shampoo from the net, possibly check out zooplus.com, my girlfriend's used it and its a very good service. Though I don't know if you can get deliveries where you are, but no harm in checking it out!

Hope that's helped and hope your little one is lice-free soon :)

thanks nutmeg but we have already went to the vet but thanks :D

embla is fine now we aare just suppose to go to the vet after ten days for another shot and a checkup :D

I have always been told (and I may be wrong here) but injections did not work to get rid of lice as the medicine (probably ivermectin or whatever it is licenced as in Iceland) entered the bloodstream and the lice, on the surface of the skin did not pick any of it up as they don't 'bite' the pig.

The injection will help to get rid of mites, however, as these bite and burrow beneath the skin.

I have always used lice and easy to get rid of lice on mine, you could email Gorgeous Guineas and ask them especially to post some to you, but like someone else said smothering them may be a better tip. I may be wrong but I would try buying a very gentle and chemical free conditioner, or something similar that is thick and can be left on for 10 minutes or so to smother the lice.
good luck
