Hello, have just noticed today that one of my gpigs - Paddy, has a sore eye, I thought it looked a bit "wet" last night at lap time but when I got in tonight it was white and crusted - have bathed it and otherwise he seems fine doing his usual eating like a horse thing - any ideas, is it just likely to be a piece of hay or dust?

Hi Julie,

Is the eye itself looking cloudy, or is it just a collection of dried secretions ("crusties" )around the eyes?

I have a pig with allergies who has this problem constantly, slightly watery eyes and always some 'crustiness' around the eyes.

Hello Laura, his eye is quite clear, it just looks a bit wetter than usual - bathed it with warm water and the white crusty stuff has gone- he's just eaten a handful of lettuice and spinach so I'm not thinking resp infection

I agree it's unlikely to be a respiratory infection, although it doesn't hurt to keep an eye out for any further symptoms. I think as you say, it could be as simple as a bit of hay/dust irritating his eye.

How is Paddy's eye?I had a piggy with that problem back in May and it was a wee flap of something on the inside of his eyelid that had to be removed byt he vet his eye has been ok ever since.
