Hi hope someone can help me we have recently been given a 4 month old long haired boar he is in good health but we noticed yesterday that one of his eyes seems closed up and is weepy could this be down to the fact that his hair may need a trim or should we take him to the vet as it may be eye infection.thanks
clare

Hi Clare,

It sounds like it could be an injury or infection, definitely needs checking out. The vet will be able to check for any foreign bodies (e.g. hay seed) in the eye and for any ulcers, and will be able to prescribe antibiotic eye drops if needs be.

Let us know how he gets on. :)

I agree with Laura - it sounds like he has got something in his eye or has injured it somehow.

Thankfully, eye injuries do heal as quickly as they come on. The sooner he can be treated, the better.

PS: I find it a lot easier to get drops or gel into a wiggly piggy's eyes if said piggy is absorbed in stuffing pigself with some grass or another treat! They tend to forget about their bodies...

Just for reference - There is a third rare condition called entropion whiich piggies can be born with. Basically the eyelid (usually lower) is folded under/inward and catches the eyeball when the piggie tries to blink. Depending upon severity, it can cause mild irritation through inflammation but also lead to secondary infection. Ultimately in bad cases it damages the cornea if not operated on to rectify the problem.

My Ginger (Sheltie cross) was diagnosed with it as a young buck - the op to rectify it was only partially successful but vet has said atm it is not serious enough to warrant a further op/GA. Most of the time he manages without a problem although we get the odd case of weepy eye and conjunctivitis which resolves over a week with fucithalmic acid eye ointment.

TOOK HIM TO VETS YESTERDAY COULDNT GET IN BEFORE THEN NOT GOOD NEWS HAS NASTY INFECTION AND THE VET HAS HAD TO PUT HIM DOWN 8...APPARENTLY ACCORDING TO THE VET HE HAS HAD THIS INFECTION FOR WEEKS AND IT HAS BEEN LEFT TO GET WORSE MEANING HE WAS GIVEN TO US WHEN THE PREVIOUS OWNER KNEW HE WAS ILL MAYBE THATS WHY THEY GAVE HIM AWAY WHICH WE ARE NOT HAPPY ABOUT BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO WHEN HE WAS GIVEN TO US, WE CERTAINLY WONT BE CONTACTING HIM FOR ANY OTHER PIGGIES grrrr

I am sorry he was PTS, very sad for you.

Do you know if the vet you use sees a lot of guinea pigs? I am just asking as, you mention in the first post, the boar was otherwise healthy aside from this poorly eye, yet the vet has put him to sleep without trying to help? I apologise in advance if you feel it is wrong of me to judge what happened given I don't know the full story, I'm just concerned that, based on what you have described here, the boar wasn't given enough of a chance by the vet.

He went downhill yest morning went off his food and seemed to have dropped alot of weight in my view he would have died within days as i have seen this happen before i certainly would not have let the vet put down an otherwise healthy pig
