My hay shipment is late so I had to go to the pet store to pick up some hay and I saw these poor piggies in a glass enclosure with no ventilation. The back of the cage was all closed in too and not a strand of hay in sight! EC7581B2-1DDB-41FD-98A9-AF8BE92D890C.webp

That's awful. I have to walk through our nearest pet shop with blinkers on, I feel so bad for the piggies.

That is terrible! If pet shops can't show how to look after piggies properly how are people supposed to? If you don't know you go by the example of the pet shop. Poor piggies.

Oh, how sad! No wonder new owners don’t get care right when they see them treated like this. Hope you complained

I would call the store. I tried to report a bunny at Totter's Otterville. I called humane society, Boone county animal shelter, and finally was directed to a police officer who informed me that they only deal with cats and dogs 😭. I haven't been back to that place since. So sad.

I bought a pig from a horrible garden centre as I couldn’t leave him there a second longer. RSPCA was no help, but Trading Standards said they would look into it. I don’t know if you are in the UK, but Trading Standards and actually pretty hot on animal rights issues?

That's good to know.

If the official channels don't show any interest (sadly all too common in these situations) I find that popping in a busy Saturday morning and speaking calmly but quite loudly to a member of staff whilst standing by the offending cage often gets results.
Having an official print out of welfare guidelines from somewhere like the ASPCA to show them makes it clear you mean business.
Many shops often aren't bothered about one person making a complaint, but do it publically when they are busy and this will often get the desired result (at least in the short term).
