Thought I would post an update as it's been a few days.

Took Sammy to a specialist vet tonight and she is staying in overnight. He wants to do lots of tests on her tomorrow but looking at her x-rays thinks she has a bit of pneumonia which is news to me as she's not showing any signs and other vet did not pick this up.

Her bottom is very wet and she's in quite a bit of pain when weeing which is a lot.

She is still off hay and pellets but been eating grass, celery, cucumber, dandelions etc.

She spends a lot of the day sitting still as she is in pain but offer food and she climbs up and likes being on the grass.

I drove home and spent 2 hours crying as I feel it's not fair to let her suffer, but part of me wonders what if. My husband had told me she must be put to sleep and I am not allowed to spend £300 as it's only a guinea pig. No she's not : ( unbeknown to him I've already spent that.

In my head I've lost her, but my heart wants to try. I even phoned emergency vet and said I wanted her put to sleep but want to come say bye in the morning. She told me to call at 8;30 and we will see how's she has been through the night.

I just want my piggy home for a cuddle : ( x

As someone who has spent around £2000 on my bladder piggy I can understand you're hurt when people say they are just guinea pigs :( My husband knows he has no choice & I will pay whatever it takes to keep mine healthy. Big hugs for you, you've tried your best for her, see what the vet says tomorrow. I am sorry & hope the news is not as bad as you expect xx

Poor you - I feel for you . It's horrible being the one having to make these decisions. My OH makes comments about "the expense" of vet bills so I hide the receipts nowadays.

She is in good hands tonight so try to get some sleep .

I wish you well for tomorrow and hope Sammy has a comfortable night.

I'm not ready to say goodbye yet. Am so so torn. Don't want her in pain but there may be a glimmer of hope.

Feel bad as not spent much time with them over the past year as I had a baby 9 months ago. My little boy has just started to love watching them and it breaks my heart to think of Peppa without her sister : (

Sorry....

Either way you are clearly a loving owner, so whichever decision is needed will be the best for Sammy. Good luck, I really hope she manages to pull through x

:hb: go poke hubby in the eye! it's only a guinea pig.... the same as its only the car, the house, the gas, the electric... blah, blah, blah/
They all need money spent on them when they go wrong & need specialists to fix them.
personally i would rather spend my money on getting my animals sorted, than the damn car, house, etc!

Would definitely keep quiet on the bill so far- don't let him read this forum! :ban:

i would try to base your decision on her quality of life, if she is happy, interested in life & pain free. your vet should be able to guide you towards their stance on her condition, as long as they are cavvy savvy vets & not just the "its only a guinea pig" school of thought type.

i was told by my vets that one of my past piggies had developed pneumonia, as well as a hay poke eye injury& an aggressive tumour in her throat, even then my vet said she was sure that if i wanted to try pneumonia treatment i could get her through it if anyone could, although very flattered, the sparkle had gone from her & she was losing weight rapidly,i felt this was not the right decision to put her through it, so had to do the kindest thing by her. even though it broke my heart :(

But so many i have had sleepless nights over & some have gone on for many happy months after being told thats it & i have not given up on them, as i didnt feel they were ready to go at the time.

You know her best & although its never easy, I'm sure you will decide what's right & best for her in the morning.

She may have perked up overnight if she's getting veterinary care in the surgery&any med's, painkillers/diuretics to remove excess fluid have kicked in properly.

Big hug for you, fingers & paws crossed sammy, x

realised i had replied to your other sammy thread too.
Just a thought, but have you considered she may have an ovarian cyst, as well as her stones etc? My 6yr old piggy kept getting uti's &bleeding. She had an ultrasound scan, which was pain free &non invasive. (my vet only charged me for the consultation fee too ) the vet confirmed a walnut sized mass &we discussed options, I suggested hormone injections (hcg) that some members had found successful on here :)
2treatments 7-10days apart &£30 approx each. We are now a happy, dry bum zone :)

I don't want to give you false hope but maybe discuss with your vet if its an option they hadn't thought about.

Thinking of you, fingers &paws still firmly crossed! Good luck in your decision. Love from the girls &I. Xx

I'm so sorry to hear this and this is heartbreaking. I hope the news are good. It's never just a guinea pig, but a lovely member of the family. Don't forget that a bit of pain is part of any illness, but that you need to look at the longterm outcome. If your vet thinks, they can successfully treat her then I would go for it. Hopefully, you have a really cavy savvy vet. We'll keep our fingers crossed here.

Sorry....

Your feelings are normal but please don't blame yourself for spending less time with them when you had your baby boy. I'm sure you provided them with a good standard of care and Peppa and Sammy have had each other as companionship.

I'm afraid we are never ready to say goodbye to a loved pet. I would follow your vet's guidance on whether it's time.
