HELP! Mine have been on the burgess excel pellets for a while and i wanted to try the black current and oregano ones.

A local petshop sells a huge range of foods and i noticed that they had science selective for piggys! So i thought id try it as my rabbits love it and do really well on it. I bought a small 350g bag but have since realised that its made with alfalfa hay. Now I'm not sure what to do!

My rabbits only get a very small amount of pellets each day, but the piggies were having bowls filled whenever they were empty (every other day). I'm worried about feeding science selective like this because of the alfalfa, but ive heard some bad reviews on the burgess food. Put it this way, id never feed it to the rabbits! If i feed the science selective pellets id probably stop feeding the piggies veg which had a high calcium content.

On testing, Burgess was found to have traces of meat protein! Science Selecive is far more natural, but has more alfalfa **confused**

Whats your advice?

Excel is also Alpha based.

The only pellet I have found which is Timothy based is Cavy Cuisine.

Ahh so whats the fuss about then? I was just reading the reviews and the one on SS said that i would have to cut down on veggies that contain high levels of calcium. Now I'm even more confused! lol.

So if they prefer the Science Selective am i able to give them that and keep their diet as normal? They have a varied diet with lots of green veggies :)

Alpha based pellets are believed to encourage stones, fed along side high calcium vegetables you maybe encouraging stones. I suggest perhaps reading GL, as they recommend feeding 1\4 cup of pellets per pig, per day, they have some excellent information.

I would much rather feed SS than excel but then I don't feed either as Cavy Cuisine does not have alpha so I feed that. Even then I feed limited pellets, its all down to preference.

I cant get hold of Cavy Cuisine in this area, and i dont like relying on online shops for food. I dont think my piggies are all that keen on pellets, they definitley eat more hay, which is excellent really! 4 scoops (which = 1 cup) lasts 2 days between 3 piggys. They arent been over fed on pellets, dont worry :)

I buy Cavy Cuisine via my vets, they will order it in for me at less than the online + delivery charge, I just have to go pick it up.

They were very amused by the name :(|)

I feed SS to my babies as Cavy says it is for pigs over 1 year old, although they do a youngster food as well I think, called something like Cavy Performance I think?

Had a hard time swapping them over though, it's obviously not as tasty as SS. Doesn't look as appealing either, but it's good for them.

I used to feed Burgess, but don't trust them anymore, after all the stories of bugs in the food and meat traces.
