My little boy Finlay scratches like crazy. He's got a good few scabs on his back, behind the shoulder blades. I haven't managed to see them cos he's to wriggliy but it feels very crusty. I have had him checked twice by the 2 different vets who have told me categorically it's not mites. What can it be and what can I do?/?/
 
It sounds like a fungal infection and I think this can lead to mites if untreated. Take some photos if you can and email Chrissie at gorgeousguineas.com and ask her advice.

Give the hair a very gentle tug and if it comes out in clumps with white danfruff on the roots,it probably is fungal.

It does sound to me more like mites though and Ivermectin is the only thing that will get rid of them.

If you think it is fungal ,get a bottle of Vetsect shampoo from your vet or from www.millpledge.com.

Alternatively,use any shampoo which contains Neem.You can get these in health food shops or some chemists.

we're just back from the bathroom. We had a coconeem melt, a coconeem shampoo and a bit of lavender ointment to calm the skin. he looks very unhappy, poor thing.
 
Poor litle chap. Best thing is to treat for both parasitic and fungal, to be on the safe side and make sure it clears up.
