If you don't kno, Rodney has been suffering from arthritis - I have just noticed this on him - is it scurvy do you think from being off his food for a few days? It's never been there before & he is eating well now he has medicine but for a few days was being very selective. Surely not?!

I am thinking more likely mange mites or fungal. Do the hairs look broken half way down the shaft? These things tend to strike when a pig is run down.

Noooo he can't have mange mites surely he is indoors?!? The hairs do look a bit broken.

I am horrified!!!

And clearly off to the vets for the 5th time this month!

Rory had something similar to that, treated for mites and his fur is back to normal

Oh my god I don't understand why he would get mites just from being run down?! Did you treat with the stuff you get off the vet, xeno whatever it is?

They have mange mites in their system all the time and they flare up at times like this. It doesn't matter if he is indoors. My preferred treatment is a course of Ivermectin injections.

Most guinea pig carry dormant mites eggs in their skin, which can strike when the immune system is lowered from illness or stress. The same goes for fungal (not necessarily always ringworm). Whether a piggy is outside or inside is irrelevant, as it is not carried in; it is already in their body but can no longer be held in check by the natural defenses.

Please make sure that you get the right diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Treating on spec could make thing worse.

Of course, I knew that aswell I've just been so preoccupied with his arthritis my brain is mashed.

Vet is sorted. Rodney happily filling his face with grass & cucumber oblivient to it all! Honestly you fix one issue & another pops up, his legs are great! Grrr.
