Hi!
I was wondering if guinea pigs could eat small guinea pig seeds. I've seen many websites say that seeds can make guinea pigs choke. Is that true? I don't want to risk anything so I decided to ask you guys. Lots of guinea pig pellets have seeds in them. I usually buy the one with no seeds. Thanks for the feedback!

I don’t think they should eat seeds due to the choking hazard. Which pellets have seeds in them? Do you mean the muesli mixes?

Guinea pigs should definitely not have seeds - they don't need them, and they can be dangerous.
I am not sure about choking, but I do know they can get stuck between teeth and cause problems.

I don't know about guinea pig pellet having seeds in them as this isn't something I have come across - can you maybe give us an example of this?

:agr:. Don’t give anything containing any seeds.
Muesli style mixes contain seeds but they shouldn’t be given muesli style and should be fed a grass or hay based pellet food.

They sell some guinea pigs feeds mixed with seeds, but I don't buy them... choking hazard, can get stuck in teeth, really fattening. I honestly think companies do it because seeds are cheaper than hay and then they jack up the price by calling it a 'premium' food, even though it's worse for them than plain pellets.

I saw that the poster is from the US... I'm in Canada and see tons of guinea pig foods that are mixed with seeds. It's really common here. Small animal medical care and nutrition is not as advanced here as it seems to be in Europe. Guinea pigs are more seen as a kids' 'starter pet' that doesn't need a premium diet or vet care.

Thank you @Freela
I had no idea - I think I am probably spoilt as although things aren't perfect here (Switzerland), small animal care is definitely taken more seriously.

You are right about the starter pet thing. Same with alot of small pets.Thing is, is many owners that i know feed cats and dogs human food, so they dont get it easy either. I see so many obese dogs around

I am guilty of feeding my cats human food as a treat. They like a small chunk of cheese, a small piece of ham and tuna. They also get treats that are marketed for cats. My auntie and uncle are really bad with their dog though, they feed him all sorts of human food and he doesn't get dog food, he gets boiled chicken thighs! They do give him dog biscuits though but they're soft. And then they wonder why he has bad teeth!

Today I visited PetSmart and found out that the store changed the no-seed pellets that we normally use into seed pellets. I think that change was the most horrible change ever! I tried to find a bag of pellets that did not have a lot of seeds and decided to remove the seeds out every time I feed Coco and Oreo.
