I always look with a tag if guinea to see what's about - I got my hutch and ferplast from there. But yesterday I saw such a sad picture of a tiny cage two pigs being given away as owner has cats. There was nothing (maybe one bowl of cereal) in the cage at all that I can see just two fully grown guinea pigs.
I have messaged and said about the risks of free guibea pigs and given two local rescues. But I really really want to help them. I've only just had my boys for three weeks. I'm not sure whether to try and take more on? they could also be very unwell I guess.

Personally,I don't agree with taking Guinea Pigs on from a "free to a good home " site. I think it just reinforces proples' attitudes that pets are easy to get rid of.

I know it''s not easy . I don't look at any of these sites.

I know what you mean. I should probably not look, but I got all my things second hand and things come up quite quickly so I tend to look every day. I've written to them, although they may not take any notice.

It is a difficult situation, and it sounds like these piggies really do need a new home.
Do you have contact with any local rescues. Would it be possible for you to contact one and see if they can take the pigs on?

If you take them on yourself you are opening yourself up to a whole host of problems. One or both may be pregnant, they may be ill or have parasites, etc. so as a new piggie owner I think you are wise to realise that this is not the best option.

Thanks Swiss for your advice. I will try calling a rescue themselves today and let them know. Xx

I see them all the time and its really hard not to take them all on. I have taken pigs from those sites before, but sadly just like the pet shop trade there is always another pig to replace them :(

That's it Flutterby, I know I could look after them and give them a good home. But as you said there will be more afterwards and no one can take them all on. Tragic. Maybe I shouldn't look. I guess emailing them and letting them know of shelters is better than nothing. X

And they come free with their tiny cage. I keep thinking about them being given somewhere else with that tiny cage. Will try the rescue In a minute but they are quite a long way away. Xx

With these ads you have to be very quick as I think there are unscrupulous people out there who trawl around gumtree & preloved for free piggies then get them & sell them on quickly. It's often mentioned that snake owners get them but I thing that is very rare because generally speaking that snake owners like any other pet owners wouldn't harm a living creature. As a rescue owner we get lots of people tagging us on various facebook animal selling groups but that is often too late so I've asked all our rescue group members to ask for them on our behalf & then contact me. We have taken in several from various places like gumtree, mostly healthy animals but occasionally badly kept & under nourished piggies. Far better them ending up with us that the alternatives x

It's the unscrupulous people that give them to their snakes. I used to feed my snakes on frozen mice.
It is illegal to feed snakes or any reptiles with live animals.
