My piggie, Lily, has been prescribed 2.4ml of Septrin once a day for Cystitis. Is this too much? I queried it with the vet afterwards and was told it was fine, but she said I can separate the dosage in two. She has also been prescribed 0.8ml of Loxicom (the dog version) once a day. I feel worried about giving her this as both are larger amounts than I'm used to giving. Thanks.

If that is the Dog Meloxidyl that is a big dose, but split in 2 that would be 0.4ml every 12 hours which sounds ok, depends on what her weight is really. What proportion is the Septrin made up as?

Thank you for your message! Lily is 1.24 kg. It doesn't say much on the bottle, just Septrin Paediatric Suspension. There is no other information on the label. I have given Lily 1.8ml of Septrin tonight, as I already gave her 0.6ml this morning from a bottle I already had left over from my other pig. I assumed that Lily would have been given a similar dosage. I have also only given Lily 0.4ml of Loxicom tonight, as I felt worried about giving her too much and all the other vets previously have told me to give her 0.4ml.

Beans is on this version of Septrin for a UTI and Toast has been on it in the past, but their dose is 0.4mls twice a day. Both are also on the same Loxicom, Toast has 0.4 - 0.6 mls a day and Beans has 0.4mls.

Her weight is good, that dosage of Loxicom sounds ok 0.4ml twice a day, if it is the Dog Meloxidyl. The Septrin dosage seems high, but it depends what mg in suspension they have made it up in. What does it say on the bottle? I'll tag @Adelle as she is great with dosages :)

Okay thank you. I think I better ring the vets in the morning and ask why she has been given such a large dosage. The poor thing hates Septrin, so it's going to be a nightmare trying to give her 2.4ml each day. She loves Loxicom though and always tries to run off with the syringe.

Thank you. The Loxicom is Meloxicam 1.5mg/ml. The Septrin has been dispensed into a bottle, so it has no information on it, only the label printed off from the vets.

The Meloxicam is ok then, the label on the Septrin bottle should tell you the dosage how many times a day etc? I didn't think they are allowed to send them out otherwise?

For the Meloxicam it says 0.8ml to be given once a day. For the Septrin it says 2.4ml once a day. Unfortunately, I didn't know the dosage of Septrin until I was paying for the medicine, but the receptionist went and asked the vet if it was a mistake but was told it was correct but I can give it in two doses.

Septrin does have a quite large dose range depending on pig size. However I would speak to the vet again regarding that dose as it does seem large. Our pigs in the past have been prescribed anywhere between 0.5ml to .0.7ml twice daily. I have heard of piggies having 1ml twice daily. Vets are the experts and have formula books at hand so please double check with them

Is it the banana one?

The metacam dose is quite high again but not unusual for vets to dose a little higher with metacam

So how did you know how much to give if it wasn't written on the label? Or is that all it says? It should say what strength it is too.

Thank you. Yes it's the banana one. Unfortunately, Lily hates it. I will ring the vets in the morning.

Banana will be the pediatric one. Talk to the vet about your concerns and ask them to explain the dosing to you. Sorry she hates it, very unusual, piggies normally like the taste unlike baytril.

It says the dosage and Septrin Paediatric Suspension 25ml on the label, no details at all regarding the Septrin. I will ring the vets in the morning. They must hate me there, as I'm always ringing worrying about things.

You are within your rights to query things, vets won't hate you for this. They see more than enough owners who will just see piggies as disposable pets so they value people like you who care

Not at all. it's good you query things if you aren't 100% sure about, clearly you love your piggles :) Mmmm does it not say how much mg in 25ml suspension? The mg is the important bit. I would ring in the morning & double check before giving any more.

No it doesn't. Normally when I ring the vets it takes them the whole day to ring me back, sometimes even the next day. If I don't get to speak to the vet in the morning, what dose do you think I should give to Lily? Do you think half of the dose - 1.2ml or shall I give her less?

It's difficult to say without knowing the strength of it. My vet doesn't use Septrin so much these days, but I think when she did prescribe it, it was about 0.7 twice a day or something like that.

Septrin is an odd one as there's various different ones. There's the white banana one and I've had a clear banana one too. And i've heard of someone having pink Septrin.

You can't guess the concentration of stuff like that, not like Metacam as you get the actual bottle.

If you're not happy giving the dose that the vet has prescribed then you're within your rights to give a lower dose. Make sure you mention it to the vet though as it might mean that you need a longer course.

Yes I would ring them as soon as they open tomorrow & explain how urgent it is you know the right dose, keep ringing every half an hour until they call you back :)

I agree about querying that dose. I have always been prescribed 0.5ml
Of paediatric Septrin per kg of Guinea pig twice a day. For a 1.25kg pig this would work out at 0.625ml twice a day.

2.4ml is just under 4x the volume of what I would expect, even split into two doses it's still twice as much each time.

Given the Septrin is the one for babies, you won't get a weaker version so the volume should never been any higher 0.5ml per kg. the "standard" Septrin is stronger and therefore would be an even smaller dose again.

As for the Metacam, that one is a grey area. I dose at 0.15ml once or twice a day of dog Metacam to a 1kg pig but my vet uses the lower end of the spectrum for dosing this and I know others that have safely given up to 0.4ml...0.8ml in one go however does seem excessive.

Is your vet piggy savvy?

I phoned the vets this morning and spoke to a different vet, as the other one wasn't working and she calculated the dosage as being 0.7ml twice a day. She couldn't work out how the other vet came to 2.4ml once a day. She has left a message with the other vet to ring me on Monday, if she thinks I should go back to the previous dosage. It's a really hard trying to get Lily to have the Septrin, as she hates it so much. I'm also not giving Lily 0.8ml of Loxicom, as I think that seems too high. I will continue to give her 0.4ml of Loxicom once a day. The vet does specialise in Exotics, but I don't trust her with guinea pigs. She's seems better with reptiles (we have two). I would love to go to another vets but it would mean moving house or learning to drive which I can't do at the moment.

That seems like a more acceptable
Dose of Septrin, you should be safe wth that and the loxicom. Should you find she is still sore with that dose of pain relief you can then discuss it when you speak to the vet again.

Hope she's on the mend soon x

I have just spoken to the vet who prescribed 2.4ml of Septrin once a day and she said she had made a mistake, and it should have been 1.4ml once a day! I told her that the receptionist went back to query the dosage when I was paying for the medicine and she still told me that the dosage was correct. I'm so angry and will definitely be changing vets. Lily had the full 2.4ml of Septrin on Friday (0.6ml in the morning and 1.8ml in the evening). Do you think this will have caused her any damage in the long-term? I have been checking her poos and they seem okay. I have also been giving her Pro C Probiotic 1-2 hours after the antibiotic.

I think you would have seen any issues by now. Well done for noticing the high dosage and I would definitely recommend looking for a new vet.

Lily's urine sample was sent away and the results came back showing that there was no bacterial growth present. The vet said that this indicates that the cystitis is due to either stress or crystals irritating the bladder lining. She told me that Lily can keep having the Septrin until the end of the week, as this can prevent secondary infections. As Lily had the overdose of Septrin on Friday, do you think that it will be best if I stopped giving it to her and only give her the Loxicom? The vet made it sound like it wasn't important for her to keep having it. Because Lily hates the Septrin so much, it's making her very stressed when being picked up and if I am moving things around in their cage. She is eating normally but I keep thinking that she doesn't look very happy. I don't know if this is due to the Cystitis or that the Septrin is making her feel ill.
