Poppy has been having problems with weight loss for the past 12 months. She has seen a specialist exotic vet multiple times, and has had blood tests and stool cultures, which were both normal, and an abdominal ultrasound which showed a possible ovarian cyst. She is on metacam for any pain the cyst might be causing her. A few months ago her weight had finally stabilised with top up feeds of emeraid sustain and the plan with her vet was to try and increase her weight back to over 900g and then operate to remove the cyst, as he can't find any other explanation for her low weight. However, she's now started losing weight again and has dropped to 685g. This is despite a diet of greens, unlimited hay and pellets plus 40 mls of emeraid sustain daily. She seems to be permanently very hungry, and begging for food. Does anyone have any suggestions on other ways to try and bring her weight back up, or on what might be going on to be causing her such severe weight loss? I am concerned that we are reaching a point where she is not going to be able to cope with any further drop in her weight.

I’m sorry to hear this.

Can I just ask whether one of the tests that was done was checking her thyroid function?
Hyperthyroidism is known to cause weight loss despite a good appetite.

Otherwise all I can suggest is increasing the amount of emeraid to 60ml and see if that helps stabilise her
