just been reading through posts of people saying they didnt realise what sex their piggies were and thought is there not a sticky on sexing with pics? sorry if ive missed it but couldnt find one..
I got a vet to check my babies, because one I wasnt sure on, although my others it was VERY obvious!
I also picked up a leaflet from pets at home, which has loads of animals on, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats etc...
Tori x

I agree with your suggestion but i also feel if people cared enough about there piggies they would research or go the vets exactly like you did (well done by the way for being safe not sorry) :).

Yeah, I didnt want to take any chances, esp as they were so young, I wanted someone elses opinion, but I'm really shocked at the amount of people who have posted saying they didnt realise. I know accidents happen, but its sad there are so many. I also saw in the free ads that there was someone who had over 20 piggies for sale as they "kept breeding" in her words! I just wanted to phone and say what are you playing at! get advice and seperate! I'm sure if she came on here and found someone local, they would have gone round and helped, I am knew to this, but would have tried, and spent over a year researching before i got my piggies. (although it is a constant learning curve and I'm always asking advice hehe) x

I understand sometimes when people have brought from a pet shop and they turn out to be pregnant as noone is to know who that piggy has been with. But to get a piggy and put it with a male is ridiculous! I find it very frustrating. i feel if you care enough about your piggies you wouldnt take the chance. Some people just see it as a pregnancy and once theyve made the mistake they just think "oh she'll be fine ill look after her now" but you cant do anything if something goes wrong. Its just not worth the risk. x

ps i also dont want to come down too hard cos i may have a pregnant rabbit, after my male (dont worry, they are getting spayed/neutered) jumped the 4ft wall to get to her, i feel ill with the worry cos i thought i had been so careful and had researched barriers etc, then to make matters worse, i had one indoors and the conservatory door blew open and the she ran out, they didnt have longer than maybe 8 seconds together but now i make sure they take turns outside while the other is in the hutch. I am so upset that this could have happened, as is my 7 year old that she may not have clicked the door shut properly :( even though ive told her not to be and that it was my fault at the end of the day, I'm the adult.

i agree, thats why I'm soo worried about my rabbit, if anything happened to her i would be devastated.
It breaks my heart to see all the rescue piggies out there while people just want the babies. I have 2 rescue 2 year olds as well as my 2 babies, and all 4 have their own characters and personalities, and are just as cute as each other! I wish I could have more but my OH says no lol x

mistakes happen. you cant help some mistakes. dont feel so bad. i hope shes ok. but its totally differnt to sexing an animals. you didnt just put the rabbits together and hope they were same sex, its different. fingers crossed shes not pregnant x x

Thanks, ive been in tears today, (i have a thread about her) she has completely changed, wont let me handle her or anything, and I would never have done it on purpose. They were both booked in to be neutered/spayed but i had to cancel, due to being ill, now I have had to cancel this appointment til I see what happens with her. But yeah, I knew the sexes, I didnt originally want 2 diff sexes, I'm just a soft spot for rescues lol x
I'm even trying to talk the OH into taking another in, well, i was until this!

There is another pretty good set of pics under that link:

http://www.coldal.org/guineapigs.html - scroll down to "gender"

One of my first pigs was another "in-betweenie", and as I never had had two girls before, I wasn't sure what I had - especially since the other girl never rumbled (she was pregnant instead!). It took me TWO trip to my vet, and things became a bit urgent after Minx had her babies...

I am going to be rehoming a new piggie very shortly, on the condition that it is a boy and that him and my Tomz get along.
I have been trying to figure out if it is a boy or a girl but it is proving very hard. The genitals do not look like a vagina, nor a penis...
Do Vets charge to sex piggies?

Hi, yeah vets do charge, but where are you getting the piggie from? i thought rescues would know what sex it was. If you were to get the piggie checked at the vets, its about £20 (depending obv on vets), but they could do a full health check. One of my boys was really hard, and even now, i wouldnt be 100% if i had had to sex him myself.

good luck with the new addition xx

Its actually my Mums guinea pig, i am proud of her to admitt she cant cope looking after him rather then just neglecting him though and i am happy she came to me.
It was sold to her from a pet store - they said he was a boy. So he has a boys name (ralphy) but for his age (one year) he doesnt seem to have testicles, but he doesnt have the obvious Y shaped vagina either.

Tomz testicles are huge so he is deffo a boy... ralphy is a difficult one indeed. Something is telling me he is a girl hehe.. shall get him checked at the vets asap before i take him on.
At the moment i am travelling to my mums house everyother day to make sure his is cared for.

No, i the end i found some pictures which matched her.
She is deffo a girl though, i was a bit dissapointed but we don't have enough room for another cage permantly... :(
