Because it has been wetter this year than normal, there seems to be more slugs around :(

Now I know some of the tricks for keeping slugs away but it has been really hard this year.

I always check on the girls before I go to bed (mine free range in a shed) and last night there must have been 4 slugs in the food bowl :)>>> three of the girls were in their house sleeping but Ena was stood right next to it :{ it was dreadfully wet and raining here yesterday.

I know the slugs only go in there to eat the food and they won't hurt the piggies but I feel really guilty and sorry for the pigs having slugs invading their house.

When the pigs lived in a hutch, slugs got to the food in there too :)>>>

Does anyone else with hutches and sheds have this problem?

For some reason, I don't get slugs in my shed! They used to climb all over the hutch when it was outside.

My loopy tribe must scare them away! ;)

You can get copper strips/tape/rings originally designed to put round plant pots to stop the slugs eating them. But at uni we had a massive slug problem and put them on the bottom of our doors as ours came in long strips so perfect for the bottom of the door. Copper is meant to have a small natural positive charge which the slugs are repelled by. They aren't too cheap (well the rings aren't) but it may help prevent the slugs invading the guinea's shed

think I will try that tape on mine when it comes too :)

When they were in the hutch, I would pour salt around the legs which helped until it rained :(

I would also feed the pellets twice a day in small, instantly devourable portion so they get eaten straight away and don't attract the slugs.

Could you put beer traps near the hutch - slugs are meant to go mad for the beer and then drown - at least happy. Or upside down grapefruit I think attracts them and then you can remove the fruit with slugs in. Bet the Gardeners World website has some tips since gardeners in the UK have all been driven mad by them - my hostas are just stems now, no leaves...

That could work.

I was wondering if I could take the food bowls out overnight seen as thats when the slugs go in? But then felt bad because they're used to having it there all the time unless they eat it all which is rare.

The girls aren't in a hutch but I could try leaving that outside the shed. I don't fancy removing dead slugs though :)>>> I have a fear of them :red

:)>>>

they have been persistent this year haven't they!?

We even had some get in the conservatory some how ?/
Just had it tiled and thought that'd stop them coming (previous owner of house only had some cheapy carpet tiles on the floor so we figured there must be some sort of gap) but found one in there a couple of weeks ago! Trusty Daddypig removed it and haven't had one since thankfully.

Made me totally paranoid about going in there as I'm petrified of them too :red

I've had no problems with slugs in my piggy shed but the other night when i popped in the kitchen before going to bed much later than usual there were five fat slugs in my cats food bowls:)>>>:)>>> i have no idea how they got in. no wonder the cats have been demanding fresh biscuits for breakfast and not eating their left overs!:)>>>

I think this year has been particularly bad for them due to all the rain we have had.

The slugs haven't been in there every night (Slime on the food bowls give it away) but last night just made me :)>>>

A couple of years ago my hubby left a dustpan outside with swept up pig food on. He went out to empty it late at night (he'd forgotten it was there) and there were about 12 slugs on it :)>>>

Home remedy I've heard it taping copper penny's to the gaps they are coming in or around anything you don't wish them to invade. I've also heard they do not like chalk.

Perhaps a piggy bowl placed down into a larger bowl and penny's taped round the rims of both?

I'm liking this idea as it is the bowls they go for. I'm thinking I could place the bowls on a small tray or something and scatter pennies on the tray? If I did that though, would there be a risk of my piggies swallowing the pennies or if I stuck them down, what could I use?

Well as much as Piggys rearrange things I would stick them down somehow..... But I'm not sure with what... As Piggys liable to nibble tape ect. Hmmmmmm Ill think on it a bit

Sand paper disks under potted plants work( wider than pot of course).... So I'd suggest putting it under food dish.... But only trouble is you don't want your Piggys nibbling spaper. Do you have any copper pots... Could place food dish in it! :)

Found a slug slimming all over my girls sweetcorn cobs. Not impressed :)>>>
