Hi,
Me and my mum have been arguing about this for weeks!
Edward is my beautiful 7 month old Peruvian boar, however until a couple of weeks ago he lived with winston who constantly humped him! They never fought and Edward just got on with it and they played and snuggled together and were fine. But when winston passed away Edward has become very upset and scared and I can hardly catch him. My mum says after spending his time being harassed by winston I should let him live on his own but I think he will be much happier with a new friend. He is extremely laid back and has been out in the run ( under extremely close supervision) with my girls and has never bothered them so I think he will except a baby boy. Should I get him one?

I am pretty new to guinea pigs so I am no pro but I know guinea pigs are better to live with other piggies.

Obviously it depends on each piggies personality as to whether they get along.

Did you say you have sows? Could you have Edward neutured so he could live with them?

thanks for the reply,
I do have sows but the last guinea pig I had neutered died during the operation so I am not going to risk that again.

O I see what shame.

I lost one of my piggies just over a week ago and saw an immediate change in the behaviour of my other piggie....from a very lively wee thing to very quiet who just sat in his igloo :(

He now has a new friend and they get along great and were bonded within a few days.

It is what you think is best for Edward but I can see my Sam has definetly benefited by having his new friend.

Good luck :)

As Edward is so extremely laid back, would it be worth to try and bond him with another laid back adult boar? That way, you will avoid the inevitable problems that come with adolescence.

You would need to ring around rescues to find a boar that would be suitable for Edward to "boardate". It is very well possible to bond adult boars and some rescues do prefer to bond only adult boars. Alternatively, you could also post in our "rescue wanted" section (please state your area), so the rescues active on here may be able to contact you if they think they had a potential partner.

Sadly, spayed sows are as rare as gold dust as the risks of an operation are even higher and it is mostly only done for medical reasons.

I agree with Wiebke :)

Go Guinea pig dating Sophie, a dedicated rescue from this forum would let Edward meet some of their piggies I'm sure. He could meet his ideal companion, and you would have back up if anything happens ? :)
