Chocolate is my first piggy that has had dental problems. On 15 Feb this year i noticed he was eating slowly. Took him to the vets and he had spurrs on his teeth, vet did his dental work straight away.

Two weeks ago i noticed Chocs right eye to be slightly bulging, back to vets got some Zithromax as suspect the bulging eye was due to a root abscess on his tooth as his teeth on examination had not grown the spurrs back as i suspected.

We have had a few rough days when he went completely off his food. So ive been supplementing him with Critical Care. After 4 days of the antibiotics Chocs showed intererst in his food so is now eating for himself just getting a top up of CC at bed time.

Chocs and I would like to say a HUGE thanks to Auntie Debbie aka furryfriends for all the advice and support she has given to us over the past few weeks.x)

So i thought it would be nice to see pics of other piggies that have dental issues or have had them in the past.

Heres my brave little soldier Chocs showing how he can munch for himself nowx)

My brave Boy Fred only had his first dental this month after growing spurs on his back molars and his incisors were slanted.

Just 3 days after his dental, Here he is..

He's back to his old weight to. Debbie also gave us help and support! x

This is Desmond my first toothy pig. He was found by a dog in freezing weather, in very poor condition. His mouth was wedged wide open by his overgrown teeth - one of his incisors was malformed and very thickened. He had his front teeth trimmed and was syringe fed for 10 days before he was strong enough to withstand the back teeth being dealt with under GA. Another week of syringing before he learnt how to use his new teeth, he had another year before the next big dental was needed. He was with me for over two years and was my special cuddle puppy.

JohnnyPig is my most recent dental pig, he's been here for 8 months or so and initially incisor trimming was all that was needed until last week when one of his premolars needed work too. He has taken a couple of days to find out how to work with the new feel of his mouth and he's back up to his normal 1500g+ today.

Fudge was my first guinea pig and my first dental pig - he died from a seizure in 2004

The little lady who taught me everything I know about dental piggies - The beautiful Miss Pops, who sadly went to Rainbow Bridge just over a year ago, not due to dental issues I must add. Poppet was fully syringe fed for nearly six months before she started to eat for herself again. She needed fortnightly filing of her teeth, but lived her life to the full.

Wilfie, another very special little piggie, who has overcome huge problems. He came to me totally unable to eat. His back teeth had grown so long that he couldn't close his mouth, despite his previous owners visiting various vets, rodentologists and Vedra. Within a couple of days of Simon filing his teeth he was able to eat, and although he needs regular dental work (every 12 days) he is leading a completely normal life.

Archie was very poorly when he came to stay with me while Sue and Winston from Cavy Corner were away on holiday. They had brought him down to see Simon a few times, and it seemed a good idea for him to be near Simon while they were away. Archie made tremendous progress during the time they were on holiday so he stayed on. In September last year, Archie became mine, when Sue asked me if I would like to keep him. It was a difficult decision for them to give him up, but they just wanted him to have the best life possible. Archie will most likely need regular dental treatment (fortnightly) for the rest of his life. He's a piggie with attitude and he loves life!

Fifi had a lovely summer here last year, but sadly began to deteriorate later in the year. When she started to suffer from seizures the decision was made to let her go. She was such a beautiful, gentle girl and Archie loved to chat to her through the bars of the run.

I am just so proud to have, or have had, all these special little piggies in my life. Dental problems do not have to be a life sentence and with the combination of a piggie with attitude and a fantastic vet they can have a wonderful life.

My guinea pig, Chipychanga, has just been diagnoised yesterday. He's having the teeth fixed April 5th.

I've got 8 piggys. I have 1 with dental issues. It was hard to notice at first as she didnt lose weight .... but just didnt put any weight on while the other 2 she came with did put weight on. She is going to need her teeth done about every 9 weeks or so. She had them done at new year, got ringworm and a dental abscess (then a 40min operation to remove it) - so she's been through a lot this year already. Her back molars grow towards each other and would eventually, if left, trap her tongue....

Anyway, here she is :

Its sad that we have so many toothie piggies but i thought it was nice to dedicate a thread to them so we can see how brave they all are, and like Debbie said great things can be done to help them.

I love Toffees toothie bed. Where did you get it from? If Chocs sees it he will be stomping his little feet demanding onex)

Thanks for starting this thread, I have been quite weepy while reading it. So many gorgeous piggies who have battled so hard with dental problems. A tribute to the brave piggies and to their owners who fight so hard for them to lead normal piggie lives.

Below is Pitch who we had to have PTS 2months ago - due to roots in her jaw intertwining after several months of syringe feeding and trimming, nothing else could be done and she was suffering so we had to help her across the bridge. There's not a day go by that me and Rach don't miss her.

I forgot to add this. My Willow also needs regular teeth work. She was neglected before by her last owner, which caused her to get bumblefoot and her teeth overgrew :( She must have either not have had access to food, or just couldn't eat, so now her spine and ribs show. I adopted her, and she is very happy now :) She needs more care than my other piggies because of her previous neglect, and because she's hairless. She just had her front teeth trimmed a few days ago, poor girl. She's permanently missing one of her bottom teeth, and the other is really short, causing the top teeth to overgrow.

Here's Willow and Fermi. You can see her ribs in the picture

The late, great Garry. He had so many problems with his health - arthritis, abscesses, ear infections - alongside being a dental pig. He was such a character though and despite one vet saying it was best to have him PTS, he had another seven months with us with the care of Simon. So many ailments, but such a fighter. Many a time it was said that a pig with even one of his issues could have given up, but he fought on to be here with his friend Minty who took such good care of his little friend.

i think you look gorgeous Glynis. I have just been crying at 10 year old Cedric and now i look a right rolleyes

I don't have a pic of Rocky on my phone but wanted to give him a mention. This wee fella was a dental pig having suffered spurs on his teeth, he underwent an op to remove them, and whilst he pulled through the op fine he passed away 48 hours later as he had literally given up on himself.

I wanted to share his story with every one, not to scare people, as whilst he passed away I am glad I took him for the treatment, but more to maybe help others who are worried about making such a decision around treatment~the thing is even though Rocky wasn't one of the lucky ones I know that without the treatment he would of starved to death, and whilst he did pass I know that I had done everything I could to help him however it was his time.

Thank you for posting this. I'm terrified of my guinea pig, Chipychanga, having his teeth done April 5th because he has to be put under anesthetic and he is 5 and a half years old. As you did, I also have to have the treatment because I have to try, and if I didn't I know he would eventually die from starvation and possibly from his teeth cutting into his cheeks and tongue. I think it would be horrible to go that way. But this way I'm giving him a chance.

I know that he is a senior pig and I don't know how long his time will be with me but perhaps, I can stretch it out a bit longer and hopefully his quality of life will be better.

I'm so sorry you lost Rocky. You can take comfort in knowing you did all you could and I know he's knows that too.

Lynn

Try keep yourself busy on the day he goes in Ping and Ching, it does help, also take comfort in the fact that your vet wouldn't make recommendations if they didn't feel that the benefits outweighed the risks. Last summer our middle aged pig Rolo had a massive tumour on his leg, I honestly thought he was a gonna, even the vets said they hadn't seen one that size but they said because he was a very lively pig and also due to his age they would recommend trying, so he underwent the knife, and he was soon on the mend. He had to have some of his leg muscle removed as well as the tumour so the healing process took quite a while, but he never gave up.I will keep everything crossed that your piggie is a fighter too when he undergoes his dental work x
