Hi all...

I bought a Rex guinea from pets at home on 31st March and was told after I paid him that he had been lonely a week because his cage buddy was taken ill with a chest infection (who was put down today I’ve been told).

I he was breathing fast and rocking slightly. I took him back on 1st April and advised he was skittish and fine. Then on 3rd, I took him back as he had crusty eyed, sounded congested and just breathing was laboured.

My Guinea is about 15 weeks old and he went in weighing 510g, increased to 560g after a few days and stayed stable and on 17th April was 530g. Today he is 540g as I’ve upped his critical care feeds again. His meds are:

•metacam once a day (stopped 15th April)
•eye ointment for his crusty eyes (now clear and stopped using)
•baytril 2.5ml twice a day and still on it.
•critical care

Initially he was sneezing a lot and lethargic and wouldn’t eat and sounded wheezy. He’s eating fine and we have cut down on hourly feeds of critical care. No more wheezy or sneezes but his breathing is still shallow and fast and he’s never squeaked or run around like my other Guineas (he’s not been introduced to other Guineas).

Today he’s even given metacam again as he deteriorated after stopping it few dahs ago and they’ve also prescribed Ronaxan antibiotic (1/8 of a tablet daily). He had a x-ray that revealed no major masses but they couldn’t sedate him for a thorough x-ray done on his side. The vet said his left lung is not filling with air and the right one is.

Can anyone advise me if they’ve had a similar case? He’s pooping and eating normal... jsit wont run around or squeal and just sits there rocking.

Sorry, but this is an issue rather for an exotics vet. It certainly surpasses my own knowledge, especially I have no personal experience with this problem. I am very sorry about your problems and the bad information from the pet shop; sadly you are not the only one. :(

So sorry your piggie is poorly. Sadly many pets at home guinea pigs arr now suffering from respiratory disease and it seems rife within their pigs. If his X-ray shows no lung field on one side then it sounds like a very severe case of pneumonia. This is a serious condition and you may need to prepare yourself for the worst. He may also recover but it is likely that he will long term have lung issues sadly. So very sorry. Let me know if you need anymore advice. Poor little pig.

x

Ps. We would be happy to see you in London if your willing to travel to Camden. However I would be talking to the pets at home you got him from to discuss them covering all the costs of the veterinary treatment.

Ok great, I’ll speak to them on Tuesday and reply to you here. I put him on grass today and he seemed very happy and grazed and moved around. The vets there have not advised me on how much Critical care to give and how often. Said to offer every hour but I don’t want to be stressing him out so much. He needs to rest also in order to get better. I’m giving about 15mls on average every 3-4 hours so 4-5 times a day. Is this sufficient? I feed him until he wants no more or starts dribbling it out. Thank you x
