hi i`m new, my guinea pig marmite has been on antibiotics for just over a week now he was on baytril for a uri i took him back to the vet after 8 days as he was hardly eating and they gave me septrin and metacam but his appetite has not changed i have been giving him liquidised pellets with some probiotic in but he will only take 1-2ml at a time. has anybody got any ideas what else i can do he has lost about 15grams since this started

Hi so sorry to hear about your baby. There is a place here on the forum called guinea pig care and discussion maybe they can help Praying for you both good luck

Hi and welcome!

I am so sorry about your problems. Baytril is well known for causing loss of appetite in some piggies. How old is your piggy and how much is he weighing?

Here are more info for hand feeding and baytril. If things aren;t getting better, perhaps you can ask your vet to shift him to another antibiotic? Could he give you Critical Care powder? Is your baby getting enough water and vitamin C?

hi thanks for the replies, marmite is 2 years old he weighed 1.48kgs when we first went to the vet but when i took him back he was 1.35kgs. the vet changed his antibiotics to septrin and he also gave him metacam, he drinks a bit but not as much as usual.

I find that sometimes the first thing they will take themselves is dandelion or grass - it's just about spring enough that you might be able to find some in the garden.

Keep going with the syringe feeding - it's tough but will keep him going and it can take a couple of weeks.

Your vet will also be able to prescribe some gut motility agent. I think we had ranitidine for our degu - but these should only be used if there is no blockage. I'm not a vet so obviously anything should be on your vets advice.

I think metacam can suppress appetite as well, but again do not stop without vet advice.

i got some probiotic from pets@home to see if that helps, he seems to be eating a bit of hay every now and then but he wont touch any veg which he normally eats mostly. i`ll get some grass and see if he`ll try it

i took marmite to another vet on tuesday who found he had a fungal mouth infection so she stopped his antibiotics and told me to use daktarin oral gel, i took him back friday and his mouth was fine but his uri had come back so he was put back on the baytril but sadly he died yesterday. my other piggy died from the same thing just before christmas could there be a link, they were only two years old, also i have a 4 month old piggy should i get him rehomed in case its my fault they got ill?

So sorry for your loss of your piggies. Its sad when things like this happen, it really is because you fight for so long to keep them going. Please don't blame yourself, it is not your fault that they got ill. It could have been a number of things.

Take care xx

Run free Marmite xx

Sadly piggies pass, but that doesn't mean its your fault you did everything you could.

Infections happen and sadly URI's can be fatal. Please don't blame yourself and give your remaining piggy lots of attention. If he lived with the other pig you may want to think about getting him another friend sooner rather than later as they can get very lonely on there own.

When you feel up to it, we can recommend some rescues were you can take him along to be paired.

RIP little Marmite.xx
