Ladies and gents,

I know I haven't been on here in a while, but I really need some help. My mother guinea pig (Ikaros) recently had a miscarriage (I never knew she was pregnant.) I have been trying to take as best care of her as I can. Now, she is pulling out her hair, and being really lethargic. She acts like she isn't getting enough air, and drags her back legs when she walks. I consulted the vet, and he thinks it could be an infection or something of the likes.

Oh, and another note on the miscarriage, she was eating her passed fetus.

Can I have some opinions, please?

I'm so sorry to hear this.

I presume Ikaros has now been separated from the boar so that she is not at risk of another pregnancy?
What medication has the vet prescribed?

Ikaros and Nymph were both females. I have come to report that she is doing much worse than the status I had posted earlier. Her breathing in rather shallow, and all I can do as of now is make her comfortable, and hope for the best. The vet prescribed no medicines, he simply said to give her Gatorade or pedialyte (sp?)

It doesn't sound like your vet is exactly cavy savvy. Is there no other vet you can take her to? I know it's late, but vets have emergency numbers. Please get her seen, this is urgent.

I have contacted all the vets I know within the area and out. I even contacted one who have seen my animals when I lived in another state. I feel like such a horrid owner. I really do. I really should have made sure there was a vet suitable for my piggies. He said he had dealt with them before, and he seemed rather knowledgeable about them. I will take her down to his house tonight (He lives right in front of his clinic) and see what he can do. I hope she makes it. She is wonderfully sweet.

She needs to see a vet ASAP given the signs you've described. This doesn't sound like something that can wait

I mentioned going to see my vet above. He told me to take her home and make her comfortable. Give her pellet mashes hand feed them to her, give her vitamin c anyway she can get it, etc. She seems to be perking up a little bit. I hope she becomes well once again. She is such a little sweetie

I am keeping my fingers crossed; have you been able to get more help?

She passed this morning. I was doing all I could. I offered her warn fresh pellet mashes, bactrim, and everything we could that the vet had mentioned. I want to thank Wiebke in particular for all the help she offered me in a private message, and to every other member who offered me support. You all are much appreciated.

I am sure without you and the community, Ikaros would have been much more uncomfortable in her final days and hours.

I am ever so sorry that you have lost Ikaros despite your best efforts!
RIP

I'm really sorry for your loss. :(

Thank you all so much for your love and wishes towards the passing of Ikaros. It means a lot to me. I will be posting in the memorial thread soon. I finally got some good pictures of her before she passed.
