Sorry to ask a silly question, in my last post it was mentioned by other members that Maisy (my piggy on the right of my avatar) was an abysynnion and that they are generally more fiesty and can nip a bit. Is abysynnion a type of breed of guinea pig? Also, i was told when i bought them initially that they were sisters from the same litter so is it possible that one can by an aby and the other one not? Hope i am making sense?! :{

An Aby is a breed of guinea pig. I'm pretty sure that all pigs from the same litter will be of the same breed, even if they have different colourings/markings. (:

That said, the breed of your pigs isn't too important, I don't think. There's lots of mixed breed guinea pigs. It's only important to have a 'purebred' guinea pig if you show them, but this forum encourages rescue over breeding/showing.

I don't know for sure what breed of pigs mine are, but I think it'd be neat to find out! :))

The guinea pig on the right looks to only be slightly abbysinian, I can see a sort of rosette on her bottom. Yes they look same litter, I had a rescue sow give birth last year to five and the sows were long haired and yet the boars were abbysinians. Yes this is a breed and I've had several male abbys and they're been the loveliest of piggies.

I don't think Aby's bite anymore than other breeds. I've had three abbys and one mixed breed Aby and only one of them nibbles me. He also only does this when I'm being too slow for the food and he's so excited to get it he gets my fingers sometimes. He's a very greedy boy.

Personally Abys are my favourite breed as they are so cheeky whereas my Coronet is very laid back and relaxed.

If you look at some accidental pregnancy threads sometimes you see babies with plain fur and then others with different. That's because they inherited it from either one of their parents and the others didn't or their relatives.

My Aby's mother was a long haired but he's just Aby only as the dad was an Aby.

I love abbys, yes they can often be fiesty but they are such big characters. Each pig has their own personality so it really is only a generalisation so don't worry about them being nippers!
From the photo she's an abby cross (a mixture) because she doesn't have all the rosettes. From the colourings they look like sisters.

The amazing thing about guinea pigs is each one in the litter can be totally different and a different breed too! My Amelia Jane is a satin but her twin was a self.

Millie is an Aby cross-looking more Peruvian now she's grown and she has the most sweetest nature :)

One of our Teddies Lottie can be quite feisty so I don't really think its the breed-it's the pigs personality.

Baby pigs breeds depend on their parents (and even their grand parents) breeds - they can come out looking like mum, dad, or more likely, a combination of both breeds.

In my experience, abysinnians have big characters :))

Excellently put Amanda! Definitely I have found they have larger personalities than my other piggies have had, but then the others have been Rex piggies which seem very laid back in comparison. My Aby piggies past & present (well Aby x Peru) have all been real characters & very fast on their paws, mine love doing laps :) I've never had one bite though, I don't think they are any more likely to than other piggies. A health check for mites is always a good thing though :)

This is my Jeffrey :))

I love that pig so much! (Excuse the mess, was moving house!)

Awww what a little cutie pie! x)

My piggies are new so I'm worried about letting them roam around outside their cage too soon, but I hope they'll be just as peppy and energetic when they do get their outside play time.

Jeffrey is a very special pig! I adopted him from the RSPCA and he was on his own for a few weeks before he went dating to find himself a lady friend (he had to wait 6 weeks post-neuter as they are still fertile until then!) and he was a house pig during that time. He'd have his cage open all day and would have the run of the house (I had a 2 bedroom flat) and he'd do what he wanted! He just went in his cage at night, and would even come up to you when you called him x)
