I recently bought two sweet girls, maybe three weeks old, two days ago. Embers and Dawn will be my third set of piggies; the first two were purchased from local nursery/pet store at weaning, and the second was a rescue at 8 months old. These two girls are really skinny, and have eczema. They had been raised in a yard, in "chicken tractor" style housing. I had to teach them to drink from their water bottle, and to eat pellets (though the breeder gave me pellets, and I thought that perhaps they were already eating them, but maybe only parents were?).
I weighed them after their 2nd day here (just spaced it the first night!). They gained about .6 ounces each overnight, and I will continue to weigh them morning and evening. I can feel all their ribs and hips. I am aware that babies go through growing stages that make them seem skinny and awkward at times, so unsure if this is normal.
Is there a way to help them gain weight? I picked fresh grass for them, which they devoured. They are getting a spring lettuce/spinach mix throughout the day, and some carrot once a day. They have pellets in their dish. I'm heading to the store today for an orange and some peppers.
Also, because of the eczema, they have been getting a coconut oil/olive oil/EO crème on their bald spots. Their coats look terrible, but I'm thinking maybe because of the oil?
I've never had these problems before - are they really problems or am I being overly cautious?
Thanks for your help!
