Skinny pigs

Just popped for a nose on cavyclassified and noticed the site owner is refusing to allow advertising of skinny pigs so they don't fall into the wrong hands.

Interesting ..... begs the question if they should be bred at all if they need that much specialist care that even a site selling cavies won't sell them

I just hope if they stay in the exotic side of guineapig breeding then owners who seek them out will give them appropriate care and they won't end up in rescue

That is interesting - I guess it is a good thing that it is being recognised that specialist care is required and I think if they are hard to get hold of, the people who go through the effort of obtaining a skinny will have hopefully really done their research first.

The problem is, it is one of those things that 'remains to be seen'. I guess no one knows whether the skinnies will end up in rescues (and how many) until it starts happening.....

Skinnies are being kept out of the spotlight to encourage research, if someone is determined to get one they will find one, hopefully after some searching. I ask how long people have been looking for a skinny and what they have learnt before I agree to add them to my waitinglist

I'm not sure, but skinny pigs are adorable ;D I met SkinnyLover's on Saturday and they were sooo cute (and tiny, they were three weeks old I think..)

The owner of CavyClassifieds has indeed got a Skinny herself and there has been long discussions between myself and others who own Skinnys into the welfare and care this special breed need. Capy my skinny, is a gorgeous little girly. She eats like a horse and demands a lot of attention, I have heard rumours that Pets At Home what to get a breeder to supply them with Skinnys, charge over £150 each! This along has worried Skinny owners.
I have also read a post recently of someone in the UK wanting to start of breeding Baldwin (totally hairless), this person only had one experience of a litter and I personally think is after the money! I personally would love to have a litter of baby Skinny's but I have decent not to breed Capy and get another female Skinny to live with her, the hairy sows wont leave her alone, they kiss her back and pull on her ears, lol.

Oh gosh, lets hope P@H don't get skinnies in to sell. They're just starting to sell (neutered) Giant and French Lop rabbits for £150 :o which means inevitably that they'll start filtering into rescues soon. At least if they're expensive they'll hopefully not be impulse buys. I haven't seen longhaired pigs in P@H yet but I'm sure it'll come.

Whether skinny pigs should have been bred is irrelevant, they're here to stay and we need to campaign against the sale to people who are just looking for a novelty pig alongside increasing the knowledge of caring for them to genuine people who want one as a much loved addition to their piggies.

as for skinny pigs i guess if there is money to be made thenm SOME people will make it regardless of ethics ect, i have had many an enconter with the results of 'fad' pets , use to have a dalmation & OES !

They can be bought in the free ads for between £20 and £50, so theres plenty of profit in them. My local p@h had a french lop for sale at £150 it was massive so obviously not a baby, at the time I went in, there was a sign saying he was not for sale at the moment, but they were taking enquires? maybe they are taking bookings from people. As I said he was'nt a baby. I wonder if people realise that their average life span is less than half that of a small rabbit. And the size of the cage they would need, and all that poop! Not a childs pet by any means. hopefully the price will put people off them, and if skinnies ever come to the pet shops hopefully they will be ridiculous prices too.

I agr it will put som popl off, but I prsonally think that it will ncourag othrs. If popl s skinny pigs for sal at say £100, thy will o som quick mntal arithmtic an think that if thy spn £200 on a pair, thy will b abl to mak quit a profit in not too long a prio.
