Hi All,

Just passing this on. Someone on Rabbits United said that Skinnys were being sold in Staffordshire petshops. I'm not sure if this was pets at home or another one but anyone in that area keep an eye out.

Goes to show that most petshops have no sense at all!

Oh my god. surely this should be illegal! those poor, dear little creatures. i hope they have a very high price tag and expert staff because those piggies need specialised care from day one mallethead:x

Hopefully someone in the Staffordshire area can help. Thanks for posting this Lou x

I know what you mean, sad thing is though 'designer pets' often seem to become more attractive, the higher the price tag, like a bit of s status symbol for nerds1 mallethead

its so sad. i'd love a skinny, but wont buy one from a breeder or ever again from a petshop! people dont know about the care for one, those poor little piggies :0:0:0:0:0:0

If someone could find which petshop they are in and give Emmas (GPQ) website address to the shop to pass on to whoever buys them, at least they will have some chance of being cared for correctly :)

I find it very unlikely that they are being sold in pet shops as there is still only a handful of breeders in the UK and they tend to have long waiting lists etc.

That said there have been lots of people trying to get into them as they see the pound signs flashing in front of their eyes so it is only a matter of time before they do appear. I just hope they are very highly priced to stop impulse buyers and are sold with correct care information as they are complicated little loves to care for.

Sorry for my ignorance but what are skinnys? ?/ I have never heard of them? I only just recently heard of lankuryas!

Absolutely gorgeous guinea pigs with no hair that look like mini hippos. Someone cleverer than me will be able to post a link to some of the thread we have on here with pictures. xx And yes, they do take very specialist care, so not to be bought/sold lightly. xx

If you search Kanika on the forum you will see GPQ's gorgeous girl sadly she passed over a couple of months ago.
I hope you are right Kate, the thing what plays on my mind is the carriers, they don't look skinny at all so maybe they have produced for petshops!

Urgh its horrible saying that! :(

I'd never heard of them either. So I've just searched and had a look at. I should imagine these little piggies need very special care.

I think it is very cruel managed to find a picture for you all......

Tracy thanks for that picture. I think they are absolutely gorgeous. They seem to have a very suspect background, as other threads have discussed, but as this picture shows, they are just lovely. x

God i've just spotted this thread and it gave me the shivers...I just wish I was closer to Staffordshire! I hate the fact that pet shops can sell guinea pigs at all (and rats) but to think of them selling skinnies is just awful, they need such specific care...I just hope to god that they aren't cheap, at least that way a) they wont sell well and b) they wont be bought on impulse. People tend to love 'trophy' pets though that are a bit different. Skinnies get dehydrated easily dont they and also need to kept indoors and warm...oh I wish I could go rescue a couple! :(

Is there a sort of on-line yellow pages that pet shops in staffordshire would be listed in, for a ring round? xx

Oh, I hope there's been an error and they're not selling them. They are so extremely cute that someone unexperienced will probably end up with one of them.

I'm in Staffs and have never seen them around - the local Pets At Home sell normal gp's but not skinnies.

I'm now itching to go out and look just randomly locally incase any appear in the pet shops, i'll immediatley get them and then get them in the hands of someone i can trust on here and i know can look after them. I couldn't live with myself if i didn't! No where near where the rumour of where they are is, just praying none come her if its true - Also hoping none are actually in pet shops where inexperienced people can get them - that would be terrible 8...

Or saying that, keep them/it for myself, surely if someone is breeding them and selling them: they need to be stopped by someone asap before they suffer due to mistreating?

I'm in West Mids and haven't heard of them being sold or seen them around?

I suppose if they are being sold its unlikely to be a P@H type chain, maybe more likely the smaller shops who have a wider variety of the more unusual pets? x

I am in Staffordshire, if someone were to find out where they were then I could go get them... even if it does take up most of my student loan! {:|

Had never heard of skinnys until now. They are very beautiful, its a shame if this is true and they are being sold in pet shops to people who dont know what they need though :(

But by buying them all you would achieve is to create a demand for them. Sadly, they would then be replaced.

I agree with what someone else said - there was a rumour a while ago that PAH were selling skinnies and it turned out to be a pack of lies.

maybe we should steal them then! or find a way for the RSPCA to rescue them!

To the uneducated eye skinnies aren't that attractive (don't lynch me) but think about it. People go into pet shops to see hairy animals would it put them off to have a hairless breed? Or would the attraction of it mean they would want them?

For me I woudl be put off, mainly because I would want an animal I could stroke. I do hope it is a pack of lies.

For the record I love skinnies. :(|)

Yes, I agree - I expect the only people who would be attracted to the idea of buying a skinny in a pet shop would be the sort who look for something a bit 'different'. Ah well, let's hope it's just a rumour.

Definitely. Going into a pet shop and buying them does not equate to "rescuing" them. You would simply be a customer and very soon others would replace them. I hope it is a rumour.

I got a little nervous when I saw the title! The image of mini-me's being sold out of petshops is disturbing enough! I have never seen the 'hairless' type of Piggys and imho, I'm not sure what to make of them. I'm not keen on the hairless cat breeds either. To me they look like (I'm sorry I'm about to say this) shaven male parts. Dr Evil/Austin Powers quote springs to mind :D
