Right, over the past few weeks I've noticed Fudge has become rather smelly. I've bathed him and checked his bum etc but he seems fine and healthy, just smelly. It is a problem as he lives inside and I really don't want to move him outside in spring as I love his little character and would miss him however I can't have him stinking the house out.

Do boars smell when they reach adulthood? He's about 9 months old I'd say now.

If yes, does neutering get rid of the smell?

The boars I have neutered stopped smelling :)

I agree with you Buppi, in my experience neutered boars soon lose the "male piggy" smell. Oddly enough this is something that my hubby commented on just yesterday after helping me clean out the piggies!

While I wouldn't advocate this generally, as a good enough reason to neuter them, it's certainly a bonus :)
That said, I'd personally again...rather see a male neutered and live indoors with the family, than live outside. So if he is in good health and you have a vet experienced with guinea neuters....I'd think about it. Then of course you could perhaps find him a little girlfriend too if you have space :)

I have found that some entire boars smell more than others...I have a real "stinker" Alfie...whose "entire" days may soon be over ;)

My two boars had a funny smell about them when they were 5 months old.....it lasted a few weeks and then disappeared. I think its something to do with them hitting puberty, because at the same time Ginge kept mounting Nugget and there was alot of rubblestrutting aswell. :)

Most of my boys have a certain smell too Kathryn but not Albie & i've also noticed his grease gland doesn't need cleaning anywhere near as much as the "intact" boys.

I have been recommended a vet near Warrington that a rescue on here uses so I might give them a ring. I'm just worried about losing him :(

And yes, Barbara, if neutered he would most definitely get a girlfriend, he needs to benefit from having the op as well as me :)

I can understand your worry. I go through it everytime we neuter a guinea pig or I when have had one of my dogs or cats neutered, it is difficult. However, if it is a well calculated risk with benefit to the animal, then, I'd neuter every time.
Good luck whatever you decide to do :)

When my boys begin to smell, I bath them in baby shampoo! It's ok for them becuase it won't hurt their eyes or anything, just as long as you don't bath them too often, otherwise they will loose the oil in their fur.
