Any idea how i can reduce the smell in the piggie room?

They are in a Thistle Hall with attached run on lino. The hutch has paper down with Easibed on top, the run is on bare lino.

They get a proper clean once a week but the run gets swept daily.

Any ideas on how to reduce the smell? I am debating about using just newspaper but changing it daily but this would mean a lot more rubbish every week.

I have 7 piggies.

Is it possible to clean out twice a week? :) That would keep the smell down.

Is your piggie room inside?

To be honest if they are in a wood hutch then you wont be able to get rid of the smell completely because wood is a great trapper of all smells!

Alot of people have C and C cages with a plastic bottom (or lino) which will not keep the smell in as air can get all around the cage... I think the smell gets trapped in more with a wooden hutch and settles (if that makes sense!)

Mine are in a cage with plastic bottom in the dining room and unless i have been a day late in cleaning no one notices any smell at all...

Edited to say: Yes to the cleaning twice a week... I have 3 piggies and they start smelling after two days. I clean every other day fully and if i am a day late they start smelling

Yea i think that may be the resolution. Any suggestions on a disinfectant/detergent?
I use one from P@H at the moment which isnt very good...

Yep its an indoor piggie room. I may put some vinyl tiles in the hutch, the hutch is open by the way...

My hutches are lined with vinyl tiles and I clean out every other day,I use a white vinegar and water solution for cleaning rather than the commercial cage cleaners

My guinea pigs are indoors in a plastic bottom tray cage. I clean them out every 3 days - by the 3rd day I can start to smell them. I ask people when they come in if they can smell them and they always say no but I'm never too sure if they're trying to be polite or not.

I'm the same as you, Jane, with 3 piggies in two plastic bottomed cages - in the living room. I clean them out fully on alternate days, and as Basil likes to poop in his cottage, I spot clean there twice a day.

I also ask everyone who comes if they smell, and everyone comments on the pleasant smell of hay.

^^ Sue I have also asked my housemate if they smell and she says "only after two days"

I am still amazed at how much they poop! I swear all they live for is hay, food and pooping...

Yes, that pretty much sounds like the life cycle of a piggie! But they enjoy all aspects of it .... so why not! And when they have willing slaves like us to provide for all their needs, what a life!

But yes, I wouldn't like to go more than two days without the full clean - and they love it so much when they go back into fresh bedding, that I enjoy it for them!

Yep i love the fresh bedding time too! I think i must be more maternal than i thought, I love caring for my piggies (and the rabbits too):))

Hmm ... I'm not maternal in the normally accepted sense of the word, but I always care for my animals probably too well! The three piggies .... and in 3 hours, a cat is arriving. We've always had cats, but lost our last two in Nov and May, and a friend is emigrating to Australia, so is entrusting her girl to us. I've prepared beds all over the place, and two "feeding stations" one upstairs, one down, so she can choose her own!

No smells in my guinea pig room

Hi,

I have 3 guinea pigs who live indoors and they have a rolls royce live, we work full time and all my boys are cleaned out every other day.

Each boy has a 5ft long by 3 ft wide cage, no matter how tired or if i am feeling unwell , our beloved boys are cleaner out. My boys are always in tip top condition.

Yes ........... I am that Guinea Pig Slave !!

Dont make out like I'm too lazy to clean them out! FFS!

They get scrubbed out weekly and the run is done daily, they dont use the upstairs of the hutch and the bottom is done weekly also. However they spend most of their time on the run.

we are all just saying that cleaning them out more would be the answer and giving you our cleaning regimes to help you out, not to get at you:).

I actually have to clean my lot out now as i have left it a day late! Silly mummys been working 2 jobs to keep them in the style they have become accustomed and did not clean them out yesterday...rolleyes:))
