I don't really know where to put this.....feel free to move it it you need to guys.

This week, I've noticed my boys are really starting to smell. Well actually it's not the boys its more their cage. I'm doing nothing differently but it's really bad.

I use newspaper, towels and fleece. I change the fleece every other day and change the towels/newspaper every 2 days. I hoover the cage out daily. Their mezzanine is just newspaper and hay and I change this every 2 days.

Why are they so smelly all of a sudden?
Is it because we're having our heating on a bit more as we're cold? Or could it be my boys are producing more smells due to their age? (they were 24 weeks on sunday based on the rough dates we've been given)

Any ideas as it's truly not a pleasant odour to be having in the dining room!?

I don't really know what's behind it or the causes but I've noticed that my boys have smell periods.

Every so many weeks, they suddenly stink and I don't know why.
I call it "man stink" :))

Maybe someone more experienced can help. As I don't know much about it, I just know that sometimes, boys seem to have times when they like to be more smelly.
I always thought it was a dominance thing or something and every now and then, they just like to have a stinky contest.

Boys do tend to smell a little more with age, well at least most of mine haverolleyes,
It can also be down to diet so if you have introduced a new food/or increased amounts its likely to affect the scent of there urine, some foods in particular are know for making pigs smell,Cabbage is one of them xx

Thanks for the replies. I will monitor their diet and see if there is anything that links to the smelly periods.

It's so annoying, whilst I think we might start changing the hay and paper on the mezanine every day to help with the smell. We can't possibly change the fleece and towels every day as we don't have enough of either and we also haven't got enough space for drying them all plus our own washing too.

Hopefully I'll get to the bottom of it with their diet.

Thank you!
