hi all this is Smokey she's a two week old female piggie. When old enough we'll have her de sexed but at the moment she's living inside. We adopted her today as her owners had an unexpected litter.

No idea what breed she is, she has shades of lighter and darker grey on her back flecks of black and white. I think she's a texcel cross from what I can work out.

any ideas?
hugs Jess

she's gorgeous!droolx)
my only concern is that she is very young to leave her mother,if she is only 2 weeks old?
cant help you with the breed, but she is so pretty!!:))

I don't know much about babies, having never had to deal with them - but I'm pretty sure that they shouldn't leave mum before 3 weeks old?

Is she eating well? Someone with more experience will be along with some advice soon, I'm sure.

well the guy said two weeks and assured me she had started eating solids I hadn't seen her eat yet though but will watch her closely. He did say she would drink from the mother but is also eating veggies. She's a very pretty girl will take better pics tomorrow, if I need to feed her myself what should I look out for? I've hand reared baby birds in the past and rabbits not guinea pigs lol she feels nice and chubby a good weight, she does l like nibbling at my fingers so I wonder if she thinks its the mothers teat?

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along soon but babies really shouldn't leave their mums that early, you will probably need to top her up with extra food at the moment.

She is lovely, but echo concerns on her age on leaving mum. Will try and point someone your way in terms of hand feeding if it is needed..

Please weigh the little piggy. In the UK the standard age/weight for weaning for males is 3 weeks, females stay until they have reached the rehoming weight of 400g at 6-8 weeks.

The rehoming age/weight for both sexes is as above.

To ensure she is getting the correct balance of nutrients for good growth please give pellets/nuggets - you can soak a small amount in warm water to soften so they are easier to eat. A bowl of dry pellets available at all times, water in a bottle low enough for her to reach easily, and plenty of hay with a small handful of alfalfa/lucerne daily as this contains a rich source of calcium. Only small amounts of veg as she is so tiny and she needs to fill up on the pellets for good growth.

Hi all well after a crash course (reading up) and some experience with hand rearing rabbits she had her first feed had some womberoo handy so fed her that will weigh her soon. She is tiny I believe but not underweight by the feel of her tummy. She doesn't feel bony at all.

Please be VERY careful with syringe feeding her - anything that goes down the wrong way, can easily kill the baby! Please also do NOT feed her any dairy products! Mushed up pellets are best, like Suzy said (as a rescue lady, she has sadly plenty of experience with bringing up orphans).

These links are from the best medical website for guinea pigs (which is American, by the way!)

Wiebke thanks but I've had plenty of experience syringe feeding baby birds
but tomorrow we're getting a bottle with a teat. She seemed to do very well a little at a time. I realize no lactose so womberoo is fine. Thanks for the links.

Do I understand correctly that you are planning to spay her when she is older? Please don't it is an unnecessary huge operation for a guinea pig. If you want her to be partnered with a boar then it is much safer to get him neutered but there are still risks. In my opinion get her another girlie friend.

Hi hi! Firstly gorgeous little girly.. you're so lucky! She's an absolute doll!

What others do you have in your menagerie? You mentioned syringe feeding birds? That's quite a job aswell, I know how persistant they are about frequency! hahaa. Do you have other guineas aswell to keep the little sausage company? You'll get alot more personality out of her if she is kept with others early on.. she will certainly be more likely to chit chat! Though you sound very knowledgeable so I'm guessing I'm preaching to the converted about the virtues of keeping guineas with other guineas :p

Aw, she's gorgeous drool
This may help:

As others have said, caution is needed with syringing a piggy to avoid aspiration - I always hook the tip of the syringe over their back teeth at a 45 degree angle and release the plunger very slowly and give them time to swallow the content. A tasty little treat after always goes down well ;)
I was very nervous the first time but it comes with practise and am much more confident with this process now :)

oh how gorgeousx) do you still have to syringe feed her? not an expert but apparently people are supposed to hand feed them via a teaspoon?!? - only so that the milk doesnt get stuck in her lungs xx i dont know i was just wondering! but what you are doing is really great! she looks really happy :) shes beautiful anywayx) xx
