Hey guys! I've had my guinea pig Louis for about a month now. When I first adopted him I found a really deep bite mark on the back of his neck which was infected and noticed that he was sneezing a lot. When I took him to the vet they gave me albon to give to him for 7 days. Although this helped with the infected bite mark Louis was still sneezing. So I called the vet and he switched Louis over to enrofloxacin. They told me to do this for 10 days. It's now been 18 days of me treating him with antibiotics and I still have yet to see improvement in his sneezing and his breathing has been pretty loud too. At this point I'm wondering if it's possible Louis could have allergies and is allergic to his bedding. The type of bedding I'm using is kaytee clean and cozy white. Or if this is just a very persistent upper respiratory. Any suggestions?

Hi, I have just looked up the antibiotics in my formulary and it looks like Albon is Sulphadimethoxine and Enrofloxacin is Baytril. It does worry me that he has not responded to 2 course of antibiotics and makes me wonder if a culture should be done to see which antibiotic is needed. However, I believe there needs to be no antibiotics in their system to do this so this is not an option at the moment. Did the vet mention if there was any fluid on the chest? If so he would need a course of diuretics too such as Furosemide. I am also wondering if this could be heart related as recurring URIs can be a sign of a heart condition. Don't panic, this can be treated with medication. I can list other symptoms of a heart pig if needed.

There is a chance this is allergy related too, but I looked up the bedding you mention and it is dust free. He could be allergic to his hay though.

I think you need to go back to your vet and explain that he is not responding to the antibiotics but also get him to check his heart too. There is also a product in the UK called Bisolvon which helps clear any mucous, I am not sure what the American brand is but it may be worth mentioning too.

Is he eating and pooing ok? How old is he?

The vet never mentioned fluid in the chest but he had discharge in his nose. And he has had a lot of snot production. Like I clean off his nose with a warm damp q-tip before floor time because it drys on his nose. He is eating, pooping, drinking, and acting normal though. He runs around doing a small squeak and begging for food as well and popcorning. He seems pretty happy and healthy except for this one factor. And according to the pet store I got him from he was 3 months when I adopted him. Which can be true because he is fairly tiny..

Ok, when you speak to your vet again please ask about Bisolvon as this should help with the snot. I am glad he is healthy and happy otherwise, You could always try changing his bedding and see if it makes a difference. Vetbed is a good alternative or fleece. There are bedding information threads on here that should be able to help but let me know if you can't find them.
