This is absolutely bizarre and my poor baby has been through so much already, I hate to think she might be losing her voice now too. She's currently getting over ringworm, she's almost done with antibiotics and will be going back for a culture in about a week. But lately, I've noticed she makes this very strange noise. It's very hard to explain into words. And I can never record her fast enough when she does it. But right before she wheeks, she makes like this breathy noise. Like she's wheeking but she's not quite able to do it completely. Shes does that a couple times then the wheek comes out just fine. It's almost like she's super excited when it's time to eat. She had a respiratory infection before that she was treated for not too long ago and shes eating and popcorning and overall very happy so I really don't think it's that she's I'll. But she squeaks a lot through out the day. So I'm wondering if she's losing her voice now. I think she might be lonely because she is still being quarantined due to the ringworm so she's wheeking more frequently. I hold her a lot, she gets lots of attention, floor time, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

And it's not like a wheezing noise either. I've never heard it before and I wish I could explain it better. It's almost like a hissing kind of sound. Then it goes away and she wheeks just fine.

If you're worried then a trip to the vet won't do any harm.

But I've had pigs whose wheekers change over time.

My last boar had a really strong shout until he got to about 5 and it slowly wore off until it was more of a huff with an occasional wheek mixed in. We liked to say that he'd worn it out over the years.

I mentioned it to the vet at one of his appointments and they weren't concerned.

Thank you for your reply. I think I'm going to take her in just to be safe and for my own piece of mind. She's very young. Not sure of her exact age, but the vet said shes probably 2 and a half month's old. Maybe younger. I adopted her and she was very sick. First lice, then a respiratory infection, then I found out she had ringworm. She was also underweight but shes grown a lot since I first got her.

Good luck! Hopefully it's nothing to worry about. Let us know how you get on :D

One of my boys has lost his wheek too after a URI ( and other things). He stands and wheeks at me with his little ears flapping but there is hardly any sound, bless him. The vet has checked lungs and all clear so it is a throat thing in his case, possibly scarring post infection. Worth checking out.
Hugs to quiet Snickers!

Awww what a sweetheart he is. I'm wondering if she's having the same thing go on, because I've listened to her lungs and everything sounds fine. I've been observing her very closely and the only thing I've noticed is she's not wanting to wheek as much. Almost like her throat is sore. But I don't know if guinea pigs get sore throats. So just to be safe I'm going to call the vet in the morning.

It could be a bit sore from a piece of sharp hay, or a bit of food that's scratched on the way down.
