So i got my new guinea pig two days ago and today i noticed that his poop went from brown to green. But i gave him spinach yesterday. He has unlimited water, food and Hay. I read about the yogurt treats and how they are lactose intolerant and i am wondering if thats what is making him sick. He is acting normal and running around. But his poop is worrying me. I am a new mother to a guinea pig. Help!

P.S. Oh, another great thing you can do for him is get him a same-sex friend. Guinea pigs get lonely without another guinea pig for company (no matter how well they get on with you -- a human is just not the same).

Depending on where you got him from it's quite likely that he has not had a lot of veg, you may have overloaded his system by giving him more than he is used to. Remember how tiny his tummy is and feed in proportion to it. Introduce veg slowly, only type at a time for a few days to see if it affects him before trying an additional type. If his poops are soft please stop giving any veg until his gut stabilises again. What is the dry food you are feeding?

A friend for him would be the most beneficial addition to his life. If you take him to a good piggy rescue they will be able to bond him with a pig of his choosing and be there for advice and support for the life of your pigs.

I agree with Suzy, could just simply have been the veg his little tummy is not used to having. Try only tiny bits at a time to introduce him to it. If you are worried i would say get him to a vet as soon as just to be on the safe side.

Are you getting him a little friend at some point?

x.

Yes I will get him a friend soon. I am still getting used to having one guinea pig. He is eating Kaytee Fiesta maxx food. I Stopped giving him the yogurt and no more veggies. But he is still a chipper litttle guy. He is only 3 months old.

Okay his poop is hard and dark brownish/green. But he ate some apple last night and he chowed down on it. But he is acting normal and running around.

Thank you so much! Its my first time owning a guinea pig and he is extremely spoiled already. His poop is getting better since i took away the yogurt from his food

The dried food you have for him is not very suitable for guinea pigs as it contains dried fruit and nuts (too high in sugar and fats) - Shelled Peanuts, Dried Bananas, Raisins, Pumpkin Seed, Dried Papaya, Dehydrated Apples.

A pelleted type of guinea pig food (which all looks the same - a bit like kibble) would better to prevent selective feeding and ensure he has a complete, balanced diet with enough Vit C.

A feed with a protein level of 17% and fats/oils 4% and Vit C level of 800mg/kg is more suitable than the feed you currently have. Check out the packaging or websites for feeds available to you.

I think Connie did this the other day, so it feels like I'm copying. But just to clarify. The piggies diet should be something like this.

- Unlimited amounts of fresh hay: all the time and good quality, makes up over 80% of your piggies diet.

- A good quality pelleted food: Unlimited for growing piggies then a little less. Pelleted diets stop selective feeding (picking out the good bits) and ensures they get a complete diet. They have lots of added vit C

- Fresh vegetables: Usually around a half a cup per piggie per day. You need to intoduce this slowly to your piggie to ensure he doesnt get an upset tummy.

- and water

No yoghurt, this may have been what caused his tummy upset. But no worries, hes happy and bouncing around.

Do you have pictures? I'm sure we'd love to see him.

Sniffs is poop back to green :(

So I checked out his food and it has 16.0% crude fat. But his poop was back to normal yesterday but i gave him a carrot yesterday for the first time. His poop is back to green and soft. I dont know what i am doing wrong? he has unlimited water, food and hay. He seems normal because he is running around and being normal. So any ideas?

Someone more experienced than me might know more ... but I would guess that you're doing everything exactly right, except that you need to introduce veggies more gradually. A whole carrot is a lot for a small pig. Any new food in large quantities can induce diarrhoea.

Okay because i gave him a half leaf of spinach the night before. So i dont know if i am overloading him with veggies. But he acts normal. I got him from a Petco petstore so i dont know if they ever gave them fresh veggies

He is my first Guinea pig so i did so much research and i would have thought they would have given him fresh veggies. But i guess not plus he is only 3 months old. So i dont know if they had him at the petstore for very long.

you he is so young and i am always cleaning out his cage and refilling his water and giving him hay. But what would * recommend would be a better way to introduce veggies? because when i try and take it away he gets territoral over the veggie.

I recommend you give him smaller amounts at a time, but if you've already given him a lot and want to take some away, don't worry, just do it. He won't hate you for very long, I promise!

you because he like hisses at me and gives me the "dont you dare take that carrot away from me" look. I also went to the store and bought him baby carrots and cucumbers.

Trust me he gets lots of love :) I take him out of his cage as much as i can. He chases my pomeranian around. Than my Bf lets sniffs play video games with him. I got him on the 30th of December and started introducing the veggies to him the next day. How long do you think it will take for him to get used to them?

If you introduce veggies very gradually, maybe giving him no more today (if he's already had some) and say a quarter of a cup tomorrow and gradually up from there, then he should be just fine.

Also, lowering his stress levels will help. Honestly, the best thing you can do about that is to adopt a friend for him. Is there a rescue place near you? (If you're not sure then ask around on this forum.) Don't trust a pet store to find him a friend - they'll very likely give you a piggy of the wrong sex or one with mites! Sad but true.

If his poops don't improve, then maybe I'm wrong about what the problem is, and you should get more advice from someone else here, or post on the guinealynx forums (http://www.guinealynx.info/forums - more active than these forums), or take him to a good vet.

Okay thank you. you i refilled his hay this morning and he already ate it. I havent given him any veggies today. Just yesterday he had carrots.
