Hi All,

Rory foster boy has what I can only call snipped ears! It looks like someone has taken a pair of scissors to them, they are snipped inwards perfectly on both sides.

It got me thinking if he was born like this though? Can guineas have the snipped ear look? It's not bites as its too perfect and some of my rescue piggies have bites and they are jaggered.

Just curious!

Yeah, I'd like to see a pigture, maybe someone on here would be able to answer!

i see what you mean... i have no idea, but its too neat for a piggy to of done it i would think

One of mine has this, and it was the work of a another pig I think...she came to me as a baby and didn't have this, then suddenly one day she did...:{ very odd. If it was a bite it was healed up etc.
I'll try and get a pic of mine tomorrow

Wow starla very X Files!

Ron it could be. It's very neat. I will try and get some better snaps. He is such a gorgeous boy this doesn't detract from that. I have an urge to flick his ears! Ha! I won't though! :(|)

aw I hope it wasn't put there by a person as that would be painful for the poor little thing :(

could they be marks put thier by a breeder? to define him from others similar? they do look balanced?

Breeders in UK do not mark their animals (as they do in USA - and that is with tags not by cutting the ears!)

i would say that the mother had trimmed them at birth.have seen this with stress and overcrowding. It just sounds like its the same.sorry i dont have a pic to compare

I certainly hope a breeder or any human being did NOT do this! It looks so painful, but it is neat...

i had a similar case with my piggies, and it was the work of another pig - and it looked so neat too! i dont have any pigtures as this was many years ago.

It looks like a possibly battle wound scar, either from Mam having difficulties bringing him around, they usually start at the ears or he has had a good squabble with another boar.

I had two boars live peacefully for a year and one day I came in my shed to find a half pink Rex boar, his ear was ripped in half perfectly. You can see on the picture Fuzzy peg, he was the other half of the fight and he got a ripped ear too...

It was a very clean rip not like you would expect from a bit wound.

I know of breeders here in OZ that snip the ears of the young ones to distinguish them from male and females at birth. So they know to take them away from mum at three weeks.
Unfortunately the practice is still very common.

Our Rosie an Abyssinian has a snip in her ears when we got her. She was handed in to a pet shop in a very sorry state with her brothers and I got her because I couldn't leave her there. She had three offspring at a very young age as a result of living with her brothers, poor thing.
She is doing well now though!

Ohh i see what you mean. He has quite a big snip! lol aww...I've had guinea pigs were they have little snip shapes at the edge of their ears bbut i'm not sure what causes it.

My boar Bertie has the same...in fact his right ear is a lot worse than his left. As he was a rescue, I have no idea how it happened.

But you are right, it does not detract from their cuteness! In fact, I think it makes them cuter! ;)

Could you get some better snaps of his ears? How old is he?
The damage whatever has caused it doesnt look like its that fresh due to the amount of hair on his ears.

Do you think it could be a deformity?

Joey had a large tear in his ear when I got him, but it was only one ear. I think that was a fight that had caused it.

Yeap, try and post a photo from above or something.
