Hello! I recently posted about my piggy and his breathing problems. We took him to the vet and found out he had a respiratory infection, pneumonia, and gi stasis. Today is his second day on medication, and I asked about Bisolvon for all of the snot, but because he is already on three medications and critical care food the vet decided not to jump to that yet. Instead, we have been doing steam showers with him and using a q-tip to try to get snot out of his nose as the mucus loosens. However, q-tips don’t work that great as they can only get what is already dripping out of his nose which is not much. While his breathing has gotten a lot better already, I am still worried about the amount of snot i hear because it is blocking his nose up. I was wondering if you guys had any alternatives to a-tips that may work a bit better. We were going to try the little suction thingies people use for when a baby has boogs, but i’m scared the suction would hurt him since guinea pigs have different nasal cavities. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

I wouldn’t use q tips or anything up the nose to be honest. Hopefully someone with more experience will be along in good time.

Hi!

Here is our information for GI stasis care: Digestive Disorders: Diarrhea - Bloat - GI Stasis (No Gut Movement) And Not Eating

Q-tips are not recommended for guinea pigs; their airways are simply too small and narrow. Priority has clearing the airways so I am not at all happy that your vet is clamping down on the bisolvon; the need to breathe comes before the need to drink and only thirdly the need to eat.

I stopped using the q-tips this morning and have just been monitoring him as he sneezes all of it out (I think the medications he was given is starting to loosen all the snot). We have an appointment made with our actual vet since we had to go to the emergency clinic last time, and his breathing has significantly cleared up since this morning so I’m not really sure what’s happening with all the snot

It is great that the snot is loosening up and he can sneeze it out. I hope that it continues.
