Hi all

Just looking for a bit of advice, Ben has had a snotty nose on and off for the last few weeks, been to vets who thought it may be a upper respiratory infection and give him Baytril for 7 days, it did seem to make things a little better, but some days he seems to have no symptoms and others a bit snotty again, other then that he is fine, has energy, eating like a horse! etc.

If it is a uri they can take longer to clear up then 7 days and baytril isn't the best antibiotic for them sadly. When you say snotty are you meaning blowing bubbles snotty or dried on snot? The fact he is full of beans and eating is a good sign. Another thing to consider is could it be an allergy? I have an allergy piggy who I had at vets and turned out hay sets him off. he has a snotty nose from time to time but its intermittent not there all the time.

Cupcake has a crusty nose every now and then and only from one nostril. She is always her normal self at the the time too.

I had a piggy with a URI who needed a 14 day course of Baytril before it finally cleared. It may be possible that a longer course is needed as some infections can be particularly stubborn.

Another thing to try is get a towel or bit of sheet etc & smear some Vick's Vapour Rub on it & fasten it close to Ben's cage especially near where he lies.

Thank you very much, it just seems to be one nostril, and no bubbles or anything just a bit snotty, I will take him back to vets I think just to be sure. Will try the vicks meantime!

Steam also helps, my vet advised to put mine in bath whilst I was in shower to clear airways. I also use vicks rubbed on tissue stuffed outside the cage near where they sleep. I would get him checked out again to be sure, better to be safe then sorry with uri's :)

How is Ben doing? if he is still unwell, i would thoughly recommend a trip to see either Vicky Temple or Rachel Wallis at Millcroft (they do a number of the sites)
best wishes
