I have had 2 lovely guineas for a week.....
After couple of days noticed fungal ( looked like dry skin/ mould) to ear of snowy. Slight crusting under eye and nose had like white flaky skin.
Took to vets. They took swabs. Still waiting results, another 5 days.
gave spot on, special shampoo and recommended canesten on areas. Total £100 vet fee.
bathed once, ok.
cream applied twice daily. Now skin all bright red on areas . No sign of fungal but skin bright pink and hairless. Also found another pstch under armpit.
Now snowy yellping when cream applied so stopped. Saw vet and told me to bring her in to look.....
still dont know if fungal, ringworm or mites bit appear to have treated for all....
reluctant to take back to vet today to charge another £30 until we know what we are treating.....
thinking of just not treating snymore till we know then consulting vet...
ideas.........
also feel snowy still so young maybe he needs a break from the distress of cream, vets etcc.... cant seem to add photo....

Can you not get anything towards cost of treatment from where you got your piggies from or did you rescue them. From your description it does sound like a fungal which does need veterinary treatment.

Got 60 pounds back. Breedersaid I should have gone back to her.... kust cant spends hundreds on this and is distressing to us and snowy. Just dont want to get rippedoff by vet. Dont see point going back today as still no confirmation whst it is. Cant use cream as hurting so dont know what to do. Dont want to spend another 30 for vet to tell me to wait!

I know it's too late now but this is another reason not to buy from breeders but to get your piggies from a reputable rescue who would not re-home sick piggies.

What's done is done so treatment is needed & only vets can give the right treatment but it is essential to get a piggy savvy vet. Is your vet on the Vet Locator at top of page or is there one on there that's near to you. Sorry, lots of questions. Did the vet supply the cream or did you get it from a chemist. There are different strengths & the one for nappy rash not for thrush should be used on piggies.

I would also ring trading standards to see exactly what your rights are when buying animals from breeders.

I took guinea to the vet to get the best treatment but I haven't got an endless supply of money.... Obviously I want the best for Snowy but I do feel sometimes the vets don't really know. We will know what it is for definite in a few days. Snowy seems happy otherwise, eating and squeaking. Just reluctant to keep popping back at £30 a time. The cream said to get canestan so used that, the one for athletes foot.... is the nappy rash one less harsh I assume? The skin just looks very pink now and some scabbed bits. No sign of fungal...
Have looked on vet locator. Nearest to me is about 45/50 min drive which isn't really practical.
Am so upset by it all. My 6 year old has patiently waited for 18 months to have her pigs and is so good at caring for them ( she is the only one loving the 'treatment' experience) and drama of the vet...
Vet recommended sudocream to ease the skin but this is impossible to smooth on her.

What was the shampoo that the vet recommended? Also did he prescribe any pain relief?

Shampoo is malaseb. No pain killers. She seems really happy all the time. Only yelping when u put cream on.
Update: snowys patches seem to be scabbing over and hair growing. No where near as Bright pink as yesterday. Still sore under its arm pit. Called vet she said the swabs are developing and so far indicate ringworm but will know for definite fri. She said she can order lotion didn't say name but said it would be £40-50!
If it is ringworm any other suggestions to treat??

Malaseb is good especially if ringworm. Please note that most fungal doesn't culture except ringworm.

I would also recommend Imaverol dips and/or topical treatment in addition to the Malaseb.

Also of it is ringworm it will get worse before it gets better and you need to use an anti fungal cage cleaner like F10 and be careful between handling other pigs. Is best to change clothes between handling too.

Finally, the vet may also recommend oral medication such as Itrafungol.
