Eli is a 4 year old boar. A few weeks ago I noticed that one of his eyes was running, and he was a bit snuffly. Within a few hours this developed into one runny eye, a runny nose, very noisy breathing, and most disturbingly his other eye starting bulging out. I really thought he was going to die.

We took him to the emergency vet, who said he probably had a cataract, was blind in one eye, and would need the bulging eye removed. He seemed to be suggesting that we had him put to sleep. I was really upset by this, and asked for other options. So he prescribed painkillers and antibiotics. When we could get him to our normal vets she also said that he might have to have the eye removed, but to keep on the antibiotics and see how it went.

I noticed that he was having trouble eating, and the next time we saw the vet she looked at his teeth, and said they were overgrown, so he went in for a dental last week.

Anyway, the situation is that his teeth have been done, but they were cut too short, so I've been handfeeding him and grating his veggies. He's now ok with bigger pellets and with hay, and his weight is increasing. However, his right eye is still slightly bulging, although it's much better than before, his left eye is still running, and his nose is still snuffly. His breathing is much much better though. He can definitely see out of both eyes.

He's been on antibiotics almost continuously for over 2 weeks now, and I can't understand why the eye and respiratory problems haven't cleared up. Does anyone have any suggestions? He's gaining weight, but I really don't want him to be poorly.

Thankyou for any ideas.

I would have him checked over again; there is still the chance of an abscess. Depending on the antibiotic and the dosage, it may not have cut through.

We have got a piggy savvy vet locator on the top bar; have you got one in reach of you?

He is on 0.5ml of baytril a day. There's no vet in Suffolk, and I don't drive, so am limited in where I can go. Is there another antibiotic I can ask my vet to consider?

If there is still an abscess/breathing problem that will not clear with baytril, marbocyl is probably the best for the job. Please ask your vet about it if he indeed comes to the conclusion that Eli needs another round of antibiotics. Unlike baytril, it is not licensed for guinea pigs, so you may have to sign a form for it.

Wishing you all the best for your boy!
