Now I've only been keeping piggies since Christmas so I'm by no means an expert. However we have learned so much over the last six months.

The one thing we didn't know until we got them was that hay should be available 24/7, of course if you keep piggies it is one of the first things you learn.

So we wandered into pets at home to get some nuggets as it is the only one the piggies will eat. So of course we wandered down to the piggie part and found about nine piggies together and not a bit of hay in sight! The same in the other cage, which also had about nine piggies.. And as anyone knows, even if
the piggies have eaten a lot of it, there is still proof that hay has been there.

As we left we told the people serving, who first said that they just had some veg. To which we told them that it was fair enough but they should have hay all the time. To which they shrugged there shoulders.

There was no sign that hay had even been in the cages. And the fact that they didn't even care, made us more angry. I know there are plenty of comments abut pets at home, but we will no longer go into the shop, the piggies will just have to get used to other nuggets.

Rant over, but still not happy.

Awwww thats awful - you'd think that the staff in these shops would have some degree of training pow-pow

I find myself going into these shops just to see if they are ok and that they have got hay etc!

I wanted to buy all 18 there and then and give them a loving home, but of course that wasn't going to happen.

Poor little piggies.

Thats horrible! The people in the P@H near you clearly don't know anything about animal care at all! Hay is of utmost importance in a guinea pigs diet.

The P@H where I live actually does have hay in the enclosure. I've been there so many times for my guinea pig and rabbit nuggets and they always had hay. Same goes for the rabbit and the adoption centre animals would have their hay in that hay rack ball thing they sell.

My own girls always have hay, I top up their hay rack and stuff their cottage bedroom with hay every single day! The three of them just eat and eat and eat!

I always feel like that when I go in. I think to myself...I wonder what type of homes these poor piggies will go to :( I know not all will go to bad homes. I got mine from P@H before I knew about rescues. But some will probably have a horrible start 8...

some pets at home are really horrible.
there is one literally 5minute walk away from me, and i must say they are quite good with PROVIDING for the animals, not saying their care is top notch, but i have to go there as my dog has special dietry food which is only available there.

however there is a different pets at home about 15minute drive away and i went in the other day, on a boiling hot day might i add, and NONE of the 'pens' had any water, and the bottles were filthy.
it just proves how the branches differ all the time.

Same here, our first three came from pets and home, but never again. I'm tempted to go back down with some hay and put it in the cage myself.

You should go back in, see if they have had hay yet and if they havnt, demand to see the manager and explain that you have already questioned why there was no hay and the fact that there is still no hay means you are not happy. Then tell them you are going to put a formal complaint in about how the animals are looked after.

Dont know what good it will do :( but at least you know you have tried!

:)

Formal complaint has been sent, and we will (by all accounts) get a phone call from the manager.

That should be fun.

I'm really please you've put a complaint in. Please make sure you copy it to head office as well. They need to know how badly their stores look after the animals.

That is totally appalling! Those poor piggies. I am glad you have made a complaint. I really hope something is done for the poor things.

But the manager is clearly lying as that is not what you saw. Maybe you should try to take it further. Go back and check if they have hay again and if not you will know the truth.
