Well after 3 weeks and still no sign of eddie, I've been to the RSPCA to try and find Tucker a mate as he is lonely and it's not fair on him. Anyway they have this gorgeous sow and a golden abby, she is a bit older then Tuck but they got on great which they were shocked about as she has had 5 failed match ups. Tucker is so laid back tho he doesn't mind being bossed around lol.
Anyway I'm having a homecheck tomorrow and just wondered what will happen I'm nervous about it, if all goes well I will get Tamber tomorrow afternoon!:<>

home check

am so sorry i must have missed the post of eddie disappearring, hoping he returns. good luck with the home check, never had one sunshine and twinkle could help you.
i would hazzard a guess and check out your cage, your yard whether it is fenced securely, and whether you know about piggies.
sending you hugs and hoping you get tamber, tucker must be like zoe so laid back half the time she falls asleepzzzzzzzzz
hoping all goes wellxx>>>xx>>>xx>>> keep us posted!

MAD RSPCA homecheck

we've had an rspca check for guinea pigs, Apart from the insane lady that came around it was nothing really. I fretted all week, practically cleaned the house with a toothbrush to ensure nothing could go wrong. i needn't of worried. she just asked a few questions about where the would live, free range and secure run in garden and that was it.

our home check was at 10:30pm she never stopped talking, not once, she told us how she stopped the rspca clinic getting robbed by scallies, ( i don;t exaggerate that she said it was a good job she knew kick boxing), gave us her full life story and then tried to sell us her home cleaning service. I doubt your homechecker will be anywhere near as mad as ours. we had to remind her to check the hutch (we'd just spent a fortune buying because we were worried our otherone wasn't big enough. heart of gold but mad as a hatter.

she basically had decided that we would be fine based on how we were and that the house was nice and clean. the fact we weren't knife weilding scallies was probably a relief for her.

Anyway

Good Luck, can't wait to see photo's she sounds lovely, and what a great name x)

Good luck with the home check ... all they tend to do is check the area where you keep them.....have a talk to you about feeding, housing, bathing etc. and where you have them out for a run....
And they want to make sure run and hutch are secure and warm enough if you have them outside and that the cage and run are secure if they are inside....no hazards such as cats or things dropping on them.

You've already got Tucker and are experienced with him....I doubt there will be a problem.

Good luck....hope to see pics of Tucker and Tamber together soon.

And if you are renting they would like to see something in writing from your landlord saying that its ok for you to keep guinea pigs.

They will ask if you are registered with a vet, and maybe take the details of your vet down, have a look at cage/hutch size, the lady that homechecked me didnt know that much about guinea pigs so she didnt ask too many questions (she says she usually only does dogs and cats), she just wrote down what we fed them on, and a bit of smalltalk about how I got piggies in the first place. Nothing to worry about :)

I had a homecheckeer for Harvey rabbit. I already had him as I sent photos to the RSPCA. The homechecker just came around to check I lived where I said etc etc. It was fine, I cleaned up and changed rabbits and he was happy. He was lovely too. He loved Tika as does everyone...lol

Are the RSPCA ok with the pig coming to a home with children. The reason I ask is some won't rehome with children under 4. This is how we were with Harvey but when I explained Caitlin was 4 in February and was gentle with the pigs and Tika they seemed fine as they realised I never leave her alone with the animals. :)

Good luck with it. :)

Well I'm gutted, got accepted that was all fine homechecker was lovely and thought the piggies had a lovely set up. Anyway went to collect Delilah at 12 put her and Tucker in the run for about 3/4 hours and they were fine popped them in there hutch about 4.30, went to make a brew heard wheeking went back and Tucker was shivering in the corner covered in blood! She has bit him around the mouth and nose area quiet badly there is a chunk missing!
I have put her in the carrier adn have sat cuddling Tucker for the past hour but he is inconsolible, he wont stop shivering and doing really awful noises. He isn't losing to much blood, I have cleaned him up but do you think I should take him the vets? I will if it's nessassary but I don't wanna waste £40 if there's nothing they will do. Not sure what to do now as there is no way I will put them back together, she has had 5 failed match up's which is sad but I think she needs to be a lone piggy but I don't have room at the mo for 2 single's. Will the RSPCA take her back?
Why are things so complicated?!

Hi Sian,

Sorry only just seen your post had to search it out as read your facebook status and wondered what was up. The RSPCA should take her back. She sounds like a right little madam bless her. Poor Tucker, not sure about the vet, maybe just monitor him he is in shock which can be serious. Is he eating?

Hope he will be ok.

Hugs,

Louise

No he hasn't eaten since and I've even put in grass and his fav veggies, he hasn't even had a drink. What can I do about the shock? I have him wrapped in a blanket on my lap, half of his face is very swollen (AROUND HIS LIP/NOSE AREA). I feel awful I should of just left well alone I just wanted him to have some company and now he will prob be scared of every pig.

Thanks for the reply Louise xx

Does he see okay in himself? If he's not eating and his face is swollen then that's a bad sign I guess... Does he look okay?

Hi Sian,

I would ring a vet for advice. Maybe keep him warm if he is still in shock. Tucker may take to a very submissive pig that doesn't boss him. Did you ring the RSPCA. Quite bad of them to rehome the sow if she has been tried with five and it hasn't worked out.

Keep us posted,

Louise

Just reading this and am so sorry its not worked out with them Sian, just keep a close eye on Tucker and I agree with Lou to speak to the vet just for advice to see what they say. Good luck and let us all know.

helen.

Hi Sian. So sorry to hear whats been going on. Poor Tucker :( I agree with Louise that may be you should phone the vet for advice. Sending lots of love and healing vibes xx Still hoping for Eddie's safe return and if you are unable to keep the sow, I hope she finds a nice home too xx

Have just tried the vet will try again in a bit but in the mean time I have hand syringe him some cooled boiled water which he took and seemed to perk up so I thought I would try him with his fav some grated carrot (he has no teeth to chew) and he demolished half a small carrot so feel much better now. I will take him first thing in the morning to my vets just to make sure he is ok as he might need some pain relief. He is such a brave boy god love him, melts my heart seeing him sad. x)

aww bless him yeah I think a vet in the morning is a good idea, he is obviously in a bit of pain so they may give him something for that. Awful seeing them hurt. Hope the little sow is ok too. :) x

poor tucker

just woke up to this and am so sorry to hear about poor tucker.
just asking did you introduce slowly? neutral terrority? were you watching them? did they have heaps of veg to take their minds of eachother?
have no idea how old tucker is but perhaps another sow or a baby boar as company for him, sending hugs and healing vibes for tuckerxx>>>xx>>>xx>>> and hoping the little girl finds a loving home the poor little girl:(:(:(
hoping all goes well at the vets, i know with cats when in shock you don't give food or water incase they choke, so hoping sweet tucker is doing better. a big cuddle from mum is the best medicine for little tucker:rose:rose
please keep us posted. take care and hugs to you all XXXXX did the rspca take the little girl back? good luck!

I'm pretty sure your pig will get over this attack.

But i have to say it does sound like you rushed the introductions, which i'm shocked about especially as you knew you were taking on a potentially troublesome piggy. Still what happened has happened. get your pig all better, keep an eye on the pigs that come into the rspca, and when you see another you like, take your time over introductions. Also I'd shampoo any pig that has come from anywhere where lots of pigs are kept, to wash away the scent of the rescue, he should have been quarrantined aswell (so he could calm down after the upheaval of moving homes, and so you could check to see if he was carrying any illness that could have been missed). there are a lot more things I'd suggest with regards to introductions and there is a lot of advice on here about introductions and quarantining new pigs, so please don't give up on getting your pig a friend, just do it slightly differntly next time.

love and healing vibes to poor tucker x>>

Sorry to hear about Tucker's ordeal. Hope he is doing allright now. If he is a quiet boy you might just want to keep company at arms length...have him smell and see and talk to a pig but not actually being with him in the cage.
Have you returned the sow back to the RSPCA? I guess she is destined to live by herself if she has that attitude.

Hope Tucker is getting better.

How is he today Sian? I really feel the RSPCA should have known this. As they got on in the rescue you weren't to know what was going to happen. When I got Harvey they tried to give me a problematic bunny who was highly strung and didn't like other buns which I found odd as I needed a rabbit to go with Tika!

I am SO sorry that this has happened! :0 It must be SO worrying for you. Give Tucker some gentle get well cuddles from me. x

Sorry haven't been on to update been really busy. They had 2 meets in nutural grounds in the rspca and when I brought her home again I moved the run to a part of the garden neither had been on for over 3 hours they were fine loads of veggies ect. In the hutch I put loads of veggies also and 2 water bowls of food 2 water bottle's ect. so I wasn't being stupid. I never left them for over 3 hours or when they first went into the hutch. I only went to kitchen about 4 metres away to make a brew when i heard awful wheeking and ran back out straight away.

I went to the RSPCA the next morning and they said they needed to take her back as she had caused Tucker great harm they had a look and sent me straight to the vet's. The vets didn't wanna stitch him as could make it worse by him scratching at it so he is on anti-biotica and they gave him some pain relief. I have been feeding him critical care as well as he is struggling to eat bless him seems much perkier today and is eating better to. The sweling has gone down no end! x

i don't think anyone said you were being stupid. its a shame this has happened.

I didn't say anyone had?/

I was just saying it prob more for myself to be honest, I could of done it slower I no that but I didn't just wacked them in together without a thought about it. Everything I seem to do for my guinea pig's goes wrong :{

You couldn't foresee this Sian so don't beat yourself up. Most of us have had ups and downs with the little monkeys. x

You shouldn't blame yourself as you DID exactly the right thing. Before I had Connie, she lived with a boar quite happily but he sadly died hence why I ended up with her and she ended up with Eliza as a cage mate. Anyway, when the lady who had Connie before me introduced her to the boar (who was neautered) she didn't really have a clue and just put Connie in the hutch with him with no introductions outside the hutch or anything but luckily they got on well together for about 4 weeks until he died. But, she was just lucky as it could have been a different story. Sending love and hugs to Tucker x
