We went to a local park near here today and they had a lovely garden centre. Unfortunately, they had a pet section that I am totally disgusted and upset with :( It was so bad, I left nearly crying :0 All the cages were filthy and tiny and there were dead fish floating around the fish tanks. On the floor, they had a Jenny Rat cage with 5 Degus in it. One of the Degus was older than the rest and half of his tail was missing :( It looked like they had just been dumped there. There was a syrian hamster and 2 male gerbils that were fully grown so it was obvious that they had been there for a while. The gerbil cage was so small and there were hardly any wood shavings for them to dig in and there was a metal wheel in there :o There was a fully grown rabbit in a really small cage too that was filthy. Things like this don't usually effect my OH but even he left feeling disgusted :( I just wanted to get all the animals out of there :(

That is terrible.
Have you thought about reporting? But then saying that i doubt alot will be done.
Its a sad fact that scene's like this are incereasing :(

I've seen garden centres like this, they always make me cry. I work with a lady that used to work at one of the garden centres and she thought they were well looked after. I kicked up a fuss with her and finally got her to see sense. I just wish they'd keep to what they're good at - gardening! It really upsets me a lot actually.

Agreed Claire, why call it a garden centre if they're doing other stuff as well!

At least the Huntingdon Garden & Leisure Centre here openly sells homewares and everything you can think of - indicated by the "leisure" part in their shop name. Only half the shop is taken up with garden stuff!

Is it worth reporting? It might not get a lot done, but it will bring it to notice.

Otherwise you could consider writing a letter of complaint.

i would report them, though the r.s.p.c.a. usually do nothing.grrrr

if only we were all made of money and could buy all those poor animals! its so awful.

It's very sad but unfortunately although buying them out will hope those few animals, they will just be replaced by more from the rodent mill and therefore funding the trade...

Pet shops should not sell live animals - but until we can get to that point (when you think they used to sell puppies and kittens not that many years ago) all we can do is vote with our feet and our money and not buy anything from shops that sell livestock. I get all of my animal supplies from a local feed place that only sells food and bedding - no live animals.

Wish we could stop it completely!

i couldnt agree more sophie and you're right, buying them only funds more stock coming in. Its such a shame.

I can't stop thinking about the place today and it has really affected me :( I think I'm going to write a letter of complaint even though I doubt it will make any difference. The young girl that was working in there seemed cluless. It was truley awful.

If they sell animals it will be licensed by your local authority - perhaps try them first? They issue the license so if the centre isn't complying to the standards, they can withdraw the license. Perhaps they will go and inspect it.

The RSPCA will not do anything as long as they have food and water

If it were swans stranded on a motorway, and Rolf Harris was there, the RSPCA would turn out in double quick time.

good point AP!

Is this Park Council run? Why not contact the Council about it? Otherwise, inform the local paper, or better still, the local TV channel... All the hype about London has died down, maybe your local MP would like to know what disgusting things are going on in his/her constituency... and if all else fails, you'll have to contact Rolf himself!:)) No, that's just a joke, but I'm serious about the other stuff though!

I would report them to the rspca and then write a letter to someone in a higher position of the Garden centre or even to your local MP it would bring the issue to his attention, and at least you will have tried to help those poor little souls.:(

Thank you all. I have drafted a letter to the Garden centre AND to the council. It probably won't make any difference but at least I feel like I have done something. I just wish I had took some sneeky photo's whilst I was there.
