Hi,

Can anyone help?

For the past 2 days, my female, 4 year old guinea has been constantly soaked in pee. I've been bathing her, but it soon comes back. The pee is yellow, with a v strong odour - like human pee in the street. There's no particular wet patch in her bedding, and she is perky and eating fine, but strangely, drinking less than usual. This is not normal for her at all.

Thanks for any advice!

I'm not sure what is could be, does she seems destressed at all when she pee's? I think maybe a vet visit will put your mind at rest, but weigh her daily to make sure she isnt losing weight.

Sounds like she may have a urine infection. Have you got a vet that you can take her to that has experience of guinea pigs, or an exotics vet? She will probably need some medication. :)

does she seem in pain when peeing or pooing. My girls had this and turned out it was bladder stones

she needs checking for a water infection, if you can sit her in a clean tub and wait for her to wee, then draw it up into a syringe and store it into fridge and take her and the wee to the vets asap and ask them to dip stick test it.

she will need antibiotics for a water infection BUT if she doesnt get better in a few days on antibiotics she needs an x-ray and possable a contrast to check for bladder stones or sludge x

As the other have said, go to the vet. She may well have a UTI, stones, internal mass or uterine infection and acting sooner rather than later can make all the difference to the outcome.

Please let us know what the vet says - if you need help finding a good vet in your area, just ask.

Thanks everyone, much appreciated. I haven't been able to tell if it's causing her any pain yet. I'm taking her tonight - to Abbey Vets in Kentish town, London. They seem to have been good with my other guineas so far. Does anyone have any opinions on them?

Just a quick thought - sometimes pigs with arthritis will sit in their own urine, so best add that to the list for the vet.

Best of luck - can't comment on the vets I'm afraid as I don't know of them.

It sounds very much like UTI (urinary tract infection). If it doesn't clear up, you need to have an x-ray done to check for stones or bladder sludge causing the problem. You vet may find an increased level of protein and traces of blood in the urine.

The best antibiotic for bladder problems is pediatric septrin (with is an oral form of trimethoprim sulfamethomaxole); it needs to be given for at least 3 weeks; 0,5 ml for and adult sizes guinea pig twice daily. It is however not officially licenced for guinea pigs (only baytril is), but quite a few vets will prescribe it.

Also give (unsweetened) cranberry juice, either pure or mixed with water, as much as you can.

Here is more info: http://www.guinealynx.info/uti.html

Best of luck!

If your vet won't give septrin, and you can make a train journey, mine will, they are based in Ewell in South London/Surrey. Piggies take it sooo much easier than baytril, its banana flavoured which they seem to like!

Hi there,

Just wanted to say good luck at the vets, let us know how you get on.

I don't know this vet you mentioned but would be interested to know how you find them as I live quite close to them.

thanks

Hi just wondering how your little one went at the vets? :...
Hope they can sort things out quickly for her XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Hi,

The vet said it's most likely just a UTI. She said her bladder seemed a bit tender, and she gave her a shot of anti-inflammatory and baytril, and injected some saline as I said she hadn't drunk any water that day. She gave me Baytril drops, which Fifi took no probs this morning :) The vet always seems to do a good job - she also sorted my other girl's (Ursula) eye ulcer a while ago - and she's thorough and friendly.

Fifi was perky this morning - though I don't think she likes me much atm because she cried A LOT at the vet's! - and I'll keep a v close eye on her over the next few days.

Oh that's good that she's got the meds..........yeah keep a really close eye on her and if in doubt......straight back! :)

Sending some healing wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeky loves for Fifi XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and sending Ursula some friendly brrrr's too xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
