Junior Guinea Pig
Pugwall, our recently rescued Aby, has caused me no end of sleepless nights since we got him, and his health problems seem never-ending at the moment.
He went on a week-long course of Baytril for a suspected URI, as he was sneezing and coughing and gradually losing weight.
The Baytril made him stop eating, apart from small amounts of hay, and his poop became dry, hard and very small, but the medicine sorted out his coughs and sneezes.
It's been two weeks since he stopped the treatment, and his appetite has returned, but he still seems to be dropping weight (albeit, more slowly) and his poop now is really soft and clumpy, but not runny.
Could this still be an after effect of the Baytril, as a few people mentioned it can disturb their gut flora and cause digestive issues? Given how much weight he has lost since we got him, should I start cutting back on his veggies to see if his poop returns to normal?
For background, I was away all last week, and my boyfriend was watching the boys, and - despite having a fridge stocked with a variety of veg - stuck with feeding Pugwall romaine lettuce and cucumber, because it was - while he was recovering - the only stuff he would eat. Could this be a factor?
Also, I was administering Fibreplex to Pugwall 3 times a day, which my boyfriend stopped doing, because he said he was eating and pooping normally then and didn't need it. Should I resume?
