Hi I am after a bit of advise about my male piggie Harry.

I got him with his brother Ron. Ron had a deformed leg and some neurological problems and was not expected to live long but i did not want to splint him from his brother as they got on so well, he lasted 3 months in the end and died 2 months ago. He did not suffer and had a happy life but his death has left harry all on his own.

Should I look in to getting Harry a friend? He is a very timid and placid piggie. I have spent a month trying to introduce him to my other pair of rescued (2 year old male) piggies but they will not accept him even when our having floor time.

I believe harry would get on with another pig quite well because of his placid nature, he never had an issue with the other pigs when I tried to introduce him, he wanted to be 'friends' with them but they refused to accept him. When he lied with Ron before he died Ron was the boss even with his disability. Harry always allowed Ron to eat first and would even push food towards him.

I don't want harry to be sad and alone (if he is sad being alone).

Any advise on if I should get him a friend (he is 5 months old now)

Thanks

Yes, I think you should get him a friend. He sounds like he would accept a friend easily. Some rescues will let you take Harry along, so he can help choose his new friend!

Its such a shame you lost Ron. :'(

i think you should deffo try and bond him with another piggie take him to a rescue and see who he likes:) good luck :)

Sorry about Ron (great name btw!)
Yup try to get harry a friend contact nearest rescue(s) to see about taking him along to get matched up
and Good Luck
Ron x

I'm very sorry to here about ron but i think you should deffinatly try and introduce him to a new friend.

Sorry to hear about Ron, a friend for Harry is an excellent idea, contact some rescues in your area to see if they will allow you to bring Harry along to see if he will bond with another male. Another option is to get Harry neutered and get a girlfriend for him. :)

aww sunshineandtwinkle that sounds like a wonderfull idea he could have his own little wife.

I'm sure I read it depends on the weight of a pig as well. Karen would be able to tell us more. Or search out threads on here, I started one on neutering when I was thinking of getting Sunshine done. Turns out my Fleur is too dominant so didn't chance it. :)

My old vet (he left, sob, sob) would do it at 4 months if they are a healthy weight. You have to wait6 weeks after nuetering til you can have him living with a girlie. I hope you find Harry a friend!

Hi thanks for all the replies.

I think I will go for a male, It would be a bit of a risk having him 'done' so he could have a little wife (love the idea though). Because his brother had some genetic issues (according to the vet), although the vet has said Harry 'seems' healthy he cannot be sure of how well he would cope with an operation, he is small for his age although he eats very well.

Off to find some local piggie rescue centre today...

That's also the problem I had with Sunshine, I was trrified of something happening to him, he is a pet shop pig so I don't know his history. Good luck finding a mate I'm sure he will take to a new friend easily, he sounds lovely! :smitten:

yeah going along to a rescue and see if they'll let you 'try before you rescue' doesn't really have the same ring to it! ;D
but i think he'd love a friend O0
