while visiting my local dunelm today for more wadding for the cosy cups i am making, i was talking to the sales assistant about what i make. i explained that i have been selling these cosy cups to help with vets fees for the rescued pigs that i take in - the last bill being for just over £100 for a c-section for angel. the woman looked at me blankly and promptly said 'but they don't live long so why spend that much on them'! why do some people think that 'small furries' do not deserve medical treatment. i dread to think what would happen if her kids ever had a guinea pig etc. i was so mad but i did explain politely that they can live several years to which she replied 'oh i'm thinking of gerbils'. so obviously they don't deserve treatment either in her eyes. what an idiotmallethead

Argh! grrrr This irritates me so much! My family don't always understand how much I would spend on my pigs. They don't understand why I keep them inside. It annoys me grrrr

Ugh, some people :(
My Bailey who I rescued last year had a corneal ulcer, and eye removal surgery and treatment for an infection she caught after cost £150. Loads of people said " but its just a guinea pig"
Grrr! Yet people will spend hundreds on cars or hobbies, why are animals any different? They should be more important, its a life we're paying for!

I agree! My father is the same, it makes me so made. He thinks that both my hamsters and guinea pigs are (and I quote!) 'Replaceable pets.' Since I can't yell at my father I walked away.pow-powgrrrrgrrrrgrrrr

That's exactly the way I feel.
Hubby has his interests and I have mind, mine costs less and in actual fact because I enjoy them so much, he enjoys it too. Well especially since captain jack is pretty much his anyway...typical boy!

It is amazing how people often refer to them as hamsters! What the heck is that all about?

Someone actually asked me yesterday, 'Are there any good points about keeping guinea pigs?'
After I had got over being speechless I told her, at length:))
She got more information than she had ever wanted about gps ha ha ha!

:laluot_32: :x
One of our engineers said to me at work recently that all guinea pigs do is squeek and run off...he then made the mistake of telling me he breeds bunnies and doesn't have any of them vaccinated grrrr
My boss (who is animal mad too and has rescue dogs) actually turned a blind eye to my wrath as she knows my passion for furries :)) Haven't seen him since so hope these ignorant people crawl back into their caves and stay there :))

pretty much everyone i work with thinks i'm mad and dont understand why i care for them like i do

This month alone i've spent over £300 at the vets (on a rabbit.. but still lol) and i had someone at work say and I quote " Oh 'poo' what you spending that much on it for.. its just a rabbit have it put to sleep and get yourself some new shoes"....:x

no words..

i wont tell them how much poppy is going to cost me to have a lump sorted on her back.. lol

I was at the vet with Manny and if a second round of antibiotics doesn't work he will need an X-ray, which would cost £100. My Dad raised his eyebrows and gave me a look that plainly said,
"You wouldn't spend that much on a guinea pig, surely? Don't be stupid."
I was so angry. If Manny needs an X-ray, he will have it. I will sell my Wii or something if I have to; my pigs mean more to me than replaceable electronics. But some people just don't understand that. :(

I hate the attitude some people have towards small animals, we had a hamster who at the age of 7 months developed a tumor, which rapidly grew to the size of a mushroom, after several vet visits, we decided to take the gamble and have the lump removed, which cost us £100. When people were told this, no-one understood, they said its just a hamster, ring its neck. or just go buy another one for £7!

£100 was a small price to pay in my eyes, after he recovered he was so much happier and more comfortable, until sadly 3 - 4 months later the lump returned internally and nothing could be done and we had to have him PTS, but that £100 meant he was with us for a further 3 - 4 months living happily and comfortably. I would have done it again if it would have helped him, poor little chap.

People are the same with my piggies if i mention they need to go to the vets, they all roll their eyes as if to say, its just a guinea pig.

I dont let comments and facial experessions bother me anymore, if people are so small minded they dont deserve my energy to explain or be mad at them,

I spent seven months and god knows how much taking Bingo back and forth to the vet when he was ill. It kept him with us and gave my younger brother some comfort to know we had done absolutely everything possible.

I'm still paying off the cost to my Mum who loaned me the money but I don't care. If I had the choice I would do it again. You cannot put a price on the time he spent with us and the joy and memories he gave us.

It is never just a pet. It is family and anyone too blind to see that does not deserve the unconditional love of an animal.

It does annoy me, but that's people for you. Their lives are far emptier for having that attitude and not experiencing the love of having a pet.
Some people just don't have the ability to comprehend what pets bring into your lives. I actually feel sorry for them because of the experience they are missing out on.
My big problem is when they pass judgement, it is as Toffeewoffee has said above 'small-minded'
What I can never understand is when poeple who are dog and cat lovers have that attitude... The species desn't matter - love is love.

All animals however small and short lived deserve our best. I personally have spent a fair amount of money treating a mouse who cost me £6.00 to buy. It doesn't matter how much her treatment cost me, I owed it to her as her owner. Recently I spent alot of money trying to prolong the life of my beautiful guinea pig Jasmine who had lymphoma, it didn't work but I don't begrudge one penny that I spent on her. People who disregard small pets as not worth spending money on annoy me.

If I've heard "it's only a guinea pig" once, I've heard it 100 times... one this week from a very close friend of mine that actually quite upset me...until I remembered that she spent £2000 on a tree!

Vets bills alone in the 3 years I've had pigs, look something like this....

Jeff - £50ish - respiratory problem

Boxy (RIP) - £80ish - renal failure resulting in PTS

Big Dave - £400 to date, various things, about to have a number of tests...expect that to at least double by the end of the day!

Cameo - £1997 in the space of 5 weeks - post op complications

Maggie - £1400 - soft palate abscesses - treatment ongoing

It's not "just" a guinea pig...its MY guinea pig!

My parents are like this, and I've often been told before that I can always have another one if my guinea-pigs die. They will let me take them to the vets (and although I wouldn't want to go behind their back, if they said no I would take the guinea-pig anyway) and now they don't moan about the cost because they know its my money and I love my guinea-pigs and I'm happy to spend that money on them. I really don't understand how most people see dogs and cats as a big commitement, and will almost always take them to the vets if they're ill but not guinea-pigs and rabbits. I spent a year finding out more information on rabbits before I got them and I keep money aside for the rabbits and piggies vet bills. They may be smaller but they are still animals and they shouldn't be left when they are ill.
