I'm not sure what's currently happening but one by one my sows keep appearing with similar symptoms, they are having discharge from their bottoms that has a strong fishy odour, I don't know if the discharge is urinary, vaginal or anal, I honestly can't tell. None of the piggies have had diarrhoea but many have had soft poops with a tail.

The first one to get this was Delilah (1.6 year old short haired sow), this happened about 2 months ago, I posted about her on here, she had clear/brown jelly like discharge with small pieces of poop stuck in it, I believe it was mucus covered poop which had a strong fishy smell and she also had a very loud growling stomach and dropped 100g in weight despite having a great appetite, she has now recovered and gained the weight back but still gets a growling stomach from time to time.

The second one to get it was Melody (1.6y old sheltie x short haired), she had white discharge with the fishy odour which shortly after came out a sow plug, the fishy smell disappeared after losing the plug, I haven't seen any discharge or odour since.

The second one to get it was Willow (2 year old short haired sow), she had the fishy smelling discharge but it was white in colour, she didn't have a growling stomach but was very hormonal and also had blood in her urine. She was treated for a UTI and since has recovered, it did come back shortly after stopping treatment for 1-2 days but is now completely gone (or so I think).

The third to get it is Lottie (1 year old sheltie sow), she has brown discharge with a strong fishy odour and is acting very hormonal towards her cagemates, she is still herself but I've noticed she tends to run out of energy faster, she is sleeping more and is generally more cuddly and quiet, she seems cold sometimes too. She poops at a normal rate but they have tails. Lottie also has symptoms of a URI, she has snuffly breathing, clear nasal discharge and crackly lungs, she will go to the vet tomorrow.

This has all happened within the space of 2 months, excuse the pun but it seems 'fishy' to me! My main concerns are UTI, pyometra, ovarian cysts, systemic fungal, GI bacterial infection, any of these seem likely? I say systemic fungal because they've had 10 weeks of ivermectin but still have a skin problem with itching, greasy fur and dandruff, all 10 of my pigs, I know if left untreated this can cause digestive problems.

Good that you are seeing a vet. UTI can be spread via scent marking on the floor. Please always change the hay and bedding very frequently when your piggies have UTI. Disinfect more thoroughly and wash any fleece and cosies at 60 C.

I normally change their fleece once per day but for the past 2 weeks it has been done twice per day (every 12 hours) but I don't wash fleece at 60 C, always 40 C and I never put anything other than detergent in, is there something I can use to kill any bacteria/fungus on the fleece as well as detergent? I've heard of someone using F10SC disinfectant before in the wash but I'm not sure if this is safe

A 60 C or even better, a 90 C wash (it will shrink the fleece somewhat) is a very efficient bacteria killer!

So I don't need to use anything else, just wash on at least 60 C? I will do that. The fleece is washed daily but it's only 40 C and swapped/shared between the two cages so this could explain why it has spread

I use Dettol or Tescos Antibacterial laundry cleanser for fleece and vet bed. I also like to hang the bedding outside in the dry sunny weather as I seem to remember from way back that sunlight can also be good against bacteria.

A wash at 60 should kill the bacteria and Help stop any bacteria spreading. I wash all my fleeces and cosies at 60. Few have come to harm.

Thank you guys I wouldn't have thought about washing fleece at 60 C if you hadn't of mentioned it! Lottie went to the vets and it appears she has a UTI, she has been prescribed antibiotics, hopefully this will help her as well as me washing the fleece properly :)
