i know most of the time people have genuine reasons they need to rehome there pets, but its becoming more and more where i look at ads and it says things like, o kids got bored, or i got a new pet so need t get rid of these ones, another one iv seen a few times are people saying they are cutting down on breeding stock, so basicaly they have been used as breeding machines to make people money now they are just useless so kick them out. it gets me sooo mad! do people really think pets are just until you get bored or sometink more entertaining comes along or they stop making you money, i mean even if kids have got bored, its the adult that has took on the responsibility of the animal, and just because a child has lost interest the adult should still look after it, its so sad. it just seems more and more common! does anybody else get really frustrated by these reasons to basically abandon pets! or is it just me lol

I don't like to judge (although we all do at times). People have different values. Some people eat animals (myself included) and some people don't. Are people that eat animals bad and people that don't good? Of course, not.

I see it that these people are rehoming the animals so that they will be looked after better. This is putting the animals' welfare first. I am glad that they do it rather than something else. People make mistakes. You don't know how much work is involved in looking after an animal until you get one. I wish that that were places families could go to "hire" pets for a few a months to try out and give back or keep at the end.

Nobody is perfect. We don't want to put people off from rehoming their animals because they are worried that they will be judged. Sometimes they advertise them on this forum. We read about "alternative" ways of 'no longer keeping pets' in the paper so let's make rehoming as pain free as possible.

it just upsets me that there are a small number of people *** just buy them on a wim then replace when they grow out of the cute stage or they get bored, then they sell them or rehome then n buy a new one on six months down the line there is an unwanted pet again. i just dont get it, maybe thats why it anoys me because i just dont understand why people would do that, i know most of the case are genuine that peopel cant cope or afford them ect, but i think when they just want to get rid as they arnt puppies anymore or kittens etc it just really gets to me why they have them in the 1st place.

I run a rescue and the most common reason for piggies coming in for rehoming is not cruelty, or neglect, or overbreeding, but because the children got bored. I blame the parents! rolleyes Mostly the pigs are only 6 months old, they would have bought them at about 8 weeks of age, so they've only had them 4 months! And usually kept them in too small a cage as well.

On the other side, 5 came in at the weekend via Cheryl, two of which had been left in a council house (empty) when the family moved out mallethead so I'd rather people handed them over!

People simply don't realise the commitment of taking on a pet - any living animal, and they don't realise the piggies can live for 6 or 7 years, often far beyond the child's interest.

I think that there are always genuine reasons for having to rehome animals, and none of us ever really knows what is around the corner. But, on the other hand, we seem to live in a more 'throwaway' society these days, where both kids and parents are used to 'upgrading' stuff all the time. Not that everyone treats pets this way, but I can't help but think that pets generally have become a victim of that, in some cases anyway.

I no longer have any rabbits, but the last two I had were from someone I worked with, who was wanting to 'swap' them with someone else for piggies. I didn't like where they were going, so stepped in and took them, but she ended up getting the piggies anyway. :(

I'd rather them try and rehome it if the kids get bored, than just be stuck in a little cage or hutch with no interaction from anyone.

Very true - as long as they try hard to find a good home, of course.

In the case of my rabbits, they were known diggers and were going to a place that the owner had clearly stated wasn't digging bunny or fox proof. :(

that is a good point, but i wish parents wouldnt buy animals as a way of entertaining children, they are a living thing not a toy, and kids get board of evrythink so when people buy them just for children it seems so nieve

I know what you all mean, but unfortunately some people are like that. But I guess its better they go to a home where they will be loved and not stuck in a cage where they arnt loved. Unfortunately too many people see animals when they are small and think 'ah what a cute little thing!' but they dont think are they still gonna be able to cope with it when its an adult or even think how long it will live for. Too many people today see pets as easily disposable, its very sad :(

Ill tell you all a story ... My friend saved a 19 year old mare from france last year. She was at a fattening farm waiting to go to slaughter. This mare had won its owner €5,000,000 over her whole racing career and thrown him some good racing foals. She then went on to auction for pennies and ended up waiting to be turned into pedigree chum... People are just brought up differently around animals. Cultures etc. I don't think its right to judge people if they have to rehome an animal for any reason. At least these people are saying oh ill rehome it rather than oh ill just wait till it dies. Its sad yes, but you can't stop it. Just as long as people are aware that they are going to a good home and that they won't be passed about. My poor rabbits only a year old and had 4 owners its a shame but these people couldn't cope so instead of letting him rot they found him a new home x

I have collected a number of piggies from homes where they have been very much loved and wanted and are being homed for genuine reasons out with the owners control.
Also in this current economic climate I know a lot of people have had to make very tough decisions, and in some cases, have had to give up family pets because there has been no other option.

ye i can see why people give away pets when their kids interest runs out.. my younger sister has has a netherland dwarf rabbit for about 7 years now, altho she no longer lives at home:( poor bunny is left at my mums , i cant care for it because her fur makes me itsch( tho i do go an d brush her when she moults) and mum s got asthma so bun jsut stays in her large indoor run thing :( id rahther have seen her with anothr family that would care but my mum wont part with her.
