Sore Foot?

Hi,

Just noticed george looks like he has a sore foot. it is the top on the foot not underneath. it is a darker red than the others with what seems like a white powdery patch (possibly dry skin but doesn't really look like it)

Has anyone come across this before?

Rest of him seems fine coat is fine no sign of mites / flees and not much scratching although he does clean his feet a lot so thought maybe he could have licked it sore?

Advice would be apprciated, think I will take him to the vets on monday but wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem.

I have just read the Peter Gurney website & think it sounds like could be fungal infection. Will def take him to vet. Funny how it is only one fooot thought may have caught it early.

He doesn't seem bothered by it although doesn't really keep still for me to look as his is only new to me! :)
 
One of my sows had this at three weeks old, and she's always had very sensitive skin also despite treatments for parasitic and fungal infection. Some pigs are just prone to skin issues and sensitivity, but hopefully your George won't be one of them.

It does sound like George has a fungal infection on his foot. Lavender and Myrrh Lotion from www.gorgeousguineas.com or Daktarin cream (from the chemist) can be applied 2-3 times a day until it clears up. If the problem does appear to be more widespread, an antifungal shampoo - Manuka & Neem from Gorgeous Guineas, or Nizoral (from chemist) - can be used to bathe him.
 
Thanks for useful tips. I am visiting the vets tomorrow so I shall see what they say. Also may try the lotion / shampoo too depending what the vet says.

I also think he has mites he scratches quite often and he has started biting his lower back. I feel so sorry for him only had him three weeks, poor thing this is last time I buy a piggie from a petshop.

I keep telling myself even if it costs me a bit to get him sorted atleast I bought him and am taking him to vets instead of someone who might not even notice these problems.

need some advise please!

Hi,

Been to vets today was mites but thankfully not fungus as well! He treated him with a blob of stuff towards top of his back, This has now spread into a big damp patch is this normal?

Also he keeps rolling on his back to itch, should I stop him doing this as will it stop the stuff working as well?

Don't worry all seems well patch has dried & he is soo excited today running at full pelt round his play pen making his extra excited noise (i know you seem to have names for noises but I am yet to learn them). It is different to the one he makes whilst skipping around & being stroked it's like mega excited or something well cute & worth the extra work of assembling in front room each day then taking down after his 3/4 hours of playtime! :)
 
tonight very worried about george's foot seems to have gotton worse I'm going back next saturday to vets should i go back sooner or wait? he though it was nothing but I don't think it's right. Do I go somewhere else for a second opinion?
 
If you're not comfortable with what the one vet is telling you, by all means, get a second opinion. I went through five vets with Pigglywink in the space of a month, before I found one that I'm confident knew what she was doing, so a second opinion is advisable if you have any doubts at all.
 
Parasitic and fungal infections can, and often do, co-exist. Treating for both is advisable, and I do think it would be beneficial for George.

The pattern for treating both would be...

Day 1 - Ivermectin dose 1 (for mites).
Day 4-6 - Bath in antifungal shampoo - Nizoral or Gorgeous Guineas.
Day 10 - Ivermectin dose 2.
Day 14-16 - Antifungal bath 2.
Day 20 - Ivermectin dose 3.
Day 25 - Antifungal bath 3.

You can buy Xeno 450 (or I believe Xeno 50 if he is very young) online and treat for mites yourself.

I have already had one dose of mite treatment from vet last monday and second dose due next saturday. So could I in effect do an antifungal at anytime as would need to order this and already on day number 6?
 
You don't want to give a bath too close to the anti-mite treatment, as you would then be washing that medicine off, so I think 4-6 days after the anti-mite treatment would be the best time to give the anti-fungal bath.
 
think it might have to wait til after his next trip to vets then, will see what he says but i'm convinced it is fungus as well as mites as his foot looks really sort of white, dry, few scabs and also loss of hair. hopefully won't spread too far before i go again will order the shampoo ready & cross my fingers!
 
just looked on gorgoius guineas site only over 12 week pigs can have the shampoo not convinced he is that old yet
 
I would definately email Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas explaining the problem with a picture of his foot if possible, and anything else you may notice on him, like dandruff, oily skin, balding patches etc, she is really helpful. I would definately let her know of any mite treatments you may have had him given in the meantime and his age so she can advise the best time to apply anything / bathe him or if he is old enough etc.

Our Boomer had a red and sore itchy foot - it could be that something is irritating him and he's just licking it - we had some Lavender and Myrrh cream from Gorgeous Guineas which cleared it all in days :)

Just out of interest, what bedding are you keeping him on? Shavings or sawdust contain very strong oils which can irritate delicate skin no end. If it is that, there are a ton of alternatives to use instead :)

Yes on shavings but switching to vetbed! I have got most of the stuff required sorted now except the vet bed! it does kinda seem like a really bad case of excema (like in humans) but are scabby bits too. it is only one foot though!
 
Well, the darker clours definately hide the poos! I chose white so that I could see any red wee if it happened, but it does show up every type of stain - toilet stain, tomato, red peppers...!
 
George's foot much better, definately put it down to shavings as he has been spending 4/5 hours a day in his play pen with no shavings for about 9 days! vetbed is on order but will not be sent til end of week as out of stock of chocolate. Can't wait to get him organised. I can't be bothered to make a cuddle cup / sleeping bed, anyone know where I can buy one that will be safe?
