One of my sows (aged 3 and a half) has suddenly started rumbling and pestering her cage mates constantly. I am used to her coming into season and it usually passes, but this one hasn't and she just keeps going and they are all getting fed up with her (it's weeks now). I thought it might be due to ovarian cysts as I have had a sow with these before (she was successfully spayed) but this girl has no other symptoms, she's not lost weight, no obvious hair loss, her nipples are long but not custy. I'm worried if I take her to the vets they will just spay her and I'm concerned as this is such a risky op. With my last girl I mentioned the injections to them but they said it was easier to operate. Any advice? Is it likely to be cysts despite no other syptoms or could it be something else? I don't really want to separate her from her friends as the herd usually gets on well.

It is likely to be either growing cysts or hormonal imbalances. if you can, please see a specialist vet or a general vet who is willing to contact an exotics vets re. hormonal treatments rather than plumping for a spay, which is a major operation.

Most often, you don't get any other of the classic symptoms or even any symptoms at all with growing cysts. the cysts that cause behavioural problems are often comparatively small growing cysts.

Hi - I had exactly the same thing with one of my girls over the summer - it went on for weeks and the other guinea pig was getting totally fed up. I took her to the vet who thought it was probably a cyst although she had no other symptoms. The vet didn't recommend treatment - she said spaying was a big op for a guinea pig and that the injections were not without risk. She said the cysts come and go and can rupture/be reabsorbed - I think this is what must have happened in our case as one day she just stopped doing it and has shown no signs for months! Hope the same happens for your girl.

The same thing happened with my Millie too.

I can also recommend the injections though as they have helped other pigs of mine over the years. Maddie also had her cyst drained but it was done by a piggy savvy vet who had done the procedure numerous times before.
