I'm getting two female guinea pigs in a couple of months. I read somewhere that 75%of sows between the age of 1.5 to 5 years old get cysts and that spaying them before that age greately reduces this risk but is very dangerous for them. Is it true?
Also, there any guinea pig rescue in Scotland that spays sows before giving them up for adoption?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum, Marta. :)

Ovarian cysts don't present the problems that they once did, it really is not worth the surgery to prevent what is quite a simple problem to treat. Spaying is not the only option for a pig with cysts, although it is obviously the most thorough and will prevent recurrance. Hormone injections can treat cysts and the symptoms, and draining the cysts via a needle will shrink them automatically (so to speak!). Both are effective and very quick treatments, with much less stress to the piggie than a spay.

Thistle Cavies Rescue is the only Scottish piggie rescue I can think of, you may be lucky and find a spayed sow there, but it's very unlikely the pigs are given this surgery as standard.

Thanks for the reply. Yesterday I found the Rabbit and Guinea Pig Welfare centre. Would it be too stressful for the guinea pigs to be in a train or a car for 4 or 5 hours?

I would avoid such a long journey if poss - we tend to travel up to 2 hours max, as some guineas find it very stressful. I'm sure there must be pigs in need nearer to you - have you tried posting a 'wanted' on the rescue thread?

Good luck

Sophie
